Brasil: outside the touristy path

I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread for places in Brasil outside of the mainstream touristic circuits for example, places such as Brasilia, Curitiba, Manaus, Belem, Joao Pessoa, and other such smaller towns, which are absolute gold mines for nice non pros and to have a more geniune and authentic Brasilian experience. That's why I'll never tire of emphasizing how important it is to make the effort to learn as much Portuguese as you can before you land in Paradise aka Brasil. I'll start with Brasilia and Curitiba, places I've spend a good amount of time over the years for both business and vacation. Of course, guys, please feel free to add to my report on these cities or other cities that fall into that category.

CURITIBA aka CWB

Curitiba is a city that I found pretty safe, very Euro feel and Euro looking, both in terms of the architecture and the look and attitude of people. Also, major drawback for Curitiba is that people there are the coldest in Brasil and it's not that easy to make friends there and the girls are notoriously cold bitches. Best way to stand a chance with the girls in CWB is to a) speak fluent Portuguese and b) stay there for a long time and get involved in either a sport club or take some course at the local universities. Girls are beautiful, blonde and euro looking. If you're into tall, blondes with blue/green eyes, big boobs and the typical Brasilian ass, then Curitiba is the place to be.

However, as mentioned above, Curitibanas are not the warmest and nicest girls to approach. Expect mega bitch shield and overly cold attitude. It's the general attitude of people in Curitiba, I think it has to do with the cold weather as it can get cold there in the winter (May-end of August). I was in CWB 2 years ago in June and I had to buy a jacket as at night, the temperature was reaching 5C and as low as 0 Celsius ( for your Yankee amigos, that's about 32 degrees Farhanheit).

Accommodation wise:
I can't really help about hostels as I have never used them, only stayed in hotels. You can use the following sites for hotels in CWB:
http://www.hoteis.com/
http://www.hoteis-pousadas.com.br/curitiba/
http://www.hospedevip.com.br/curitiba/ho...itiba.html

(you can use the above sites for pretty much any city in Brasil. DO NOT make reservations to hotels in Brasil from an english language site as you'll be charged twice if not 3 times the going rate!), unless you can get unbeatable deals in places where a nice hotels can be really expensive like in Rio or SP and you happen to have access to killer and unbeatable deals as I do with my travel biz/membership in Rio). [Image: wink.gif]

There are a lot of budget oriented hotels in downtown Curitiba, which is very convenient as it's right beside the UFP (Universidade Federal do Parana). I found CWB very easy to navigate, the city is small enough that you can walk to pretty much most of the areas of interest. You'll need to take the occasional cabs at night to go to the chic bairro of Batel where you'll find the nicest bars, lounges, clubs and restaurants. The public transport system in CWB is worldclass and the best in all Latin America and one of the best in the world. The city is clean, green thanks to its avant-guardiste planning by its mayor for the past half century or so. At times, you'll feel like you're back in Europe there. It's a lot safer than Rio/SP but you'll still have to keep your guards up and be alert and use common sense as you would anywhere in the world.

There are a lot of good stuffs going on in CWB to do at night and during the day in terms of shows, events, drama and other concerts to entertain yourself and your date and or to pick up. Nightlife is good specially in the bairro of Batel where all the best clubs, lounges and restaurants are located.
Batel is the wealthy part of town and you'll see some truly luxurious condos and houses there. There are also loads of ethnic restaurants and restaurants with a theme. Very enjoyable to take your date there. Truly a wonderful city with the only drawbacks being the colder weather and people. I also found CWB cheaper, cheaper than Rio or Brasilia but it depends on your style and whether you're a budget travel/penny pincher or you just want to have a good time without worrying much about $ as I do while travelling. So it can get expensive if you want to live and feel like a king/celebrity but can be done on a cheaper budget for which I can't really help (even tough I should start being more careful with $ while travelling).

BRASILIA aka BSB

About Brasilia, I enjoyed my time there everytime I was there. It's a strange city, the way it's set up, everything is spread out yet accessible...only by car. A car is a MUST in BSB. It can get hot as hell during the day, so your best bet is to stroll in the big shopping malls there (most enjoyable one IMHO was Patio Brasil right in the heart of the Seitor Hoteleiro). Lots and lots of eye candy there for sure. But keep in mind, that BSB is considered the most expensive city in Brasil as that city is full of government officials and diplomats. Some of the mansions you see in the Zona Sul Lagoa can give more than match and even surpass some of the 7 & 8 figure mansions you'd see in Beverley Hills and Hollywood, California.

It's insane there. BSB is a strange city, you either will love it or hate, there's no middle ground. Best thing to do there is get yourself a nice and educated girl from a good family and background, rich enough to have her own car (which shouldn't be that difficult in BSB because the population in BSB is generally wealthier than any other place in Brasil) and you'll have a blast there. There's loads of fun things to do there, specially if you're into outdoor activities. There are awesome natural swimming pools with spring water, which are an awesome place to game or take your girl. Can get super crowded in the weekends. Best to go during the week where you'll have the place pretty much to yourself. Plus, there's an absolutely world class natural park not very far. The Chapada dos Veadeiros in Goias, about 3 hours by car outside of Brasilia is a must to see. Go there for a weekend with your girl, you'll have a blast. Absolutely mesmerizing scenery, awesome falls that make for some very relaxing swimming. Good value money wise as well as you can find good accommodations for about 70-100 Reais. A must thing to do for a nice relaxed weekend in the big and beautiful outdoors.

Accommodation wise, I can't help much about hostels as I have never stayed in one, always in hotels. In Brasilia, is a very unique and interesting city the way it's set up. From the air, it looks like an eagle with its wings spread out about to take off. The city itself is divided in 2 parts, Asa Sul and Asa Norte (South Wing and North Wing) alluding to the Eagle. There's a section for everything and hotels are all located in one area of town, called Seitor Hoteleiro (Hotel sector if you will) very conveniently located in the centre of town, close to the famous Esplanada dos Ministerios, the huge park where all the Brasilian federal government buildings, including the Parliament and Senate as well as the very scenic Brasilia Cathedral are located. I've used the hoteis.com site to make my hotel reservations in Brasilia. Or you could even just show up and check the various hotels in the Seitor Hoteleiro and settle for one you like based on your budget. I've found that hotels in the Asa Sul are better looking but also more expensive than the ones in the Asa Norte. You can also find some cheaper options a little outside the centre of town staying in family run pousadas. But the area can be a bit sketchy. I almost stayed in one there last time I was in BSB but the area didn't look to my liking, and since BSB is a pretty spread out city, I decided to stay in a nicer hotel in the Zona Hoteleiro, Zona Norte where I got a nice and clean room for about 90 reais a night.

Transportation wise, there is an extensive bus system there and I felt confortable enough to use the bus in BSB a few times. Cheap, fast and reliable. There's also a metro/subway system in BSB which I have not used yet so that's an option as well. Cabs are of course the best option for those late night adventures. Brasilia is safe enough that you could even consider renting a car if you're staying there for more than 2 weeks (which I highly recommend to really get to know the city and get a very fine girl that you'd feel proud to be seen with and even would be happy to introduce to your family). I'm mentioning this just to emphasize on how the girls in Brasilia are fine and can be considered having the total package if you will. [Image: wink.gif]

Why would one want to come to Brasilia if Brasilia is the most expensive city in Brasil, is hot as hell and is so spread out that a car is a must? Well, the sights are beautiful, the architecture is world class and the people are cool. The women are top class as well: beautiful, educated, independent yet nothing of the bitchy attitudes that the North American women are hopelessly polluted with. The chances of getting a girl who likes you more than your wallet or what you can do for her are a lot higher in BSB than in other parts of Brasil, at least IMHO. You better have your shit together before coming to Brasilia as this is a sophisticated city, safe, clean with a population among the most educated of Brasil. The girls are fun and there are 2 major universities there, so lots of eye candy and possibilities there. But it's not cheap.

As I wrote before, Brasilia is a city you'll either love or hate, there's no in between in that city. The majority of Brasilienses, hop on a plan on Fridays to party to Rio or Buzios, Angra dos Reies or Paraty during the weekend and return on Sunday night. There's a lively night life in BSB. I will post names of the places in vogue right now soon as these are very unstable and change very rapidly.

All in all, BSB is a city I'd recommend if you have your game and shit together and are not a budget traveler. The sights, the gatinhas and the culture more than makes up for the cost, isolation and heat.

I'll post more about BSB and CWB as I get updates from my contacts there and as my memory of places I went to come back. Feel free guys to add more about these cities and other similar cities which are out of the beaten tracks of this mesmerizing country that is BRASIL [Image: heart.gif] .

I wonder if cold chicks is only an exception to Curitiba or becomes a rule as you travel more south towards Porto Alegre... With them being more of European decent and all...

S. Brazil girls are German descent right? Well that explains the coldness.

Brasil: outside the touristy path

I stayed in Curitiba for a couple of months I think about 5 years ago and I didn't find the people that cold at all. One thing is that if you stay in the richer parts of the city, where most of the hot girls are, you'll need a car. The public transport system is good, but I don't think it runs at the late hours of the night. I didn't even bother while I was there. Taxis are abundant, though and cheaper than in Rio.

Also, accomodation while I was there was pretty cheap I think it was something like 600 dollars a month, but that's when the real was weaker hovering below 3 reals per dollar. Go to the main tourist street in centro (the name escapes me but ask around) and ask the hotels for the "mensalidade" or monthly rate. They do charge a lot for extra stuff including phone and if you have a girl stay over. The rooms are very minimal. Just a bed, tv, dresser, and bathroom. But it was pretty nice regardless. I'm sure you can find apartments easily, but you need to find a "fiador" or co-signer.

The girls are hot, and there are blondes, and lighter skinned girls, but don't expect every 3rd girl to be blonde. There are very euro looking girls though. Some with huuuuuuuuuuuge tits.

I was there training BJJ at the ChuteBoxe mma gym every day, so most nights I was too tired to go out, but going out alone isn't that tough, as most people are very friendly. I met a couple from Cordoba who stopped by Curitiba on the way to Floripa because they were taking buses, so there may be some Argentines there, but they were the only ones I met.

Anyway, most of the specifics are really fuzzy in my mind, but if any questions come up, I'll do my best to answer them.

I'm curious about something, I remember a girl from Brazil telling me once that the S. of Brazil isn't the "real" Brazil. Do you find any truth to that?

I can't really say as to whether it is a general rule as you go further south in Brasil, but Curitiba has a well established reputation as being the coldest city in the country, both in terms of weather and the attitude of the people.

South Brasil the majority of people are from Euro decent, mainly from Germany, but as well as Eastern Europe as there is a huge Ukrainian and Polish communities there. There are towns in Southern Brasil that you really feel you're in Germany or Eastern Europe. In some cities, like Joinville, Bleumenau, people still speak German and dress like in the interior of Germany, in typical old fashion way. The architecture of the buildings, houses are definitely germanic looking. There are also lots of Italian, Spanish, Portuguese descendants there as well.

Can't really talk about Porto Alegre since I haven't been there yet but from what I've heard, it's a decent city, filled with beautiful girls . Quality wise, Curitiba was high in terms of beautiful girls, mainly blondes with blue/green eyes, big boobs and nice brasilian ass. Also, from what I've heard from my brasilian friends, Gauchas, girls from the state of Rio Grande do Sul whose capital is Porto Alegre, the women are awesome if one is looking to get married as they are very family oriented and know how to take care of the husband in many ways.

Of coarse I'm going to say Vitoria. The only downfall is the cheapest place you are going to find to stay there is going to be around $35-40 a night. But the people I met there were awesome and the women are absolutely gorgeous. The best girl to guy ratio I've ever seen and the most beautiful girls I've ever seen in one place. The girls have bitch sheilds for sure, but if you get in with some locals I'm sure you won't have problems if you have tight game and they have hot friends. Its just kinda hard approaching in clubs here. I posted a big detailed thread on Vitoria already, check it out if you want more info. I know this place well, I lived here for 2 months. You are going to want to know at least basic Portuguese here though. Another couple of spots I liked were Juiz De Fora and Leopoldina. I didn't get to spend a whole lot of time in Juiz De Fora, but definitely saw potential. I only went out to a club/bar one night, but there were plenty of beautiful women around. These two places, you want to know Portuguese as well. But I'm fairly certain most places listed on here, that will be the case. Leopoldina might not be the coolest place unless you are just looking to chill out in a nice atmosphere. Didn't have much to offer as far as clubs or bars or really anything else for that matter. There are some surrounding towns that are fun as well and when there is something going on there, a lot of people from Leopoldina will go to the surrounding town. I had fun there because I knew people. My friends dad owned the only club in town. Leopoldina is a colonial town in Minas Gerais, pretty close to Juiz De Fora. The road from Juiz De Fora to Leopoldina is the worst paved road I think I've seen in my life. The road has a lot of curves, a lot of huge potholes, and its only two lanes. There are times when you are going on a blind corner, there will be a huge pothole in the road and you will have to drive into the other lane, not knowing if someone else is going to be driving around the corner at the same time.

As far as Curitiba goes, I hear there isn't much to do, and I heard that from someone who is from there. He says they go to Joinsville a lot to party, which to me didn't seem like much of a good spot, but I only really passed through there one day.

All these out of the way cities and their details need to be condensed into one single list. Because when I get around to going back to Brazil, I'm going to have all these scattered bits of information I've got to piece together.

So true, if you don't have anything to do during the day, it's a pretty boring city. It's a great city, just not that many sights to see. [/b]

Lilseezie,
In a nutshell, Goiania is highly regarded by Brasilians as the city with the most beautiful and highest babe per capita in all of Brasil. That says it all. It's also considered as one of the most developped and safest capitals in the country. But hot and humid as hell.

Manaus is highly regarded as having the horniest chick in the entire continent where they literally attack guys and is home to one of the most stunning scenery in the world, the Amazon. Sao Luis is a very pretty colonial town with some beautiful girls. Both Goiania and Manaus are very high in my list to visit on my upcoming 6 months journey in Brasil starting this October. Manaus is down right suffocating at times due to the intense heat/humidity but the frequent tropical rains are god sent. I'm a bit busy these days, but expect a report on Manaus first in the next few days as I have a couple of friends who have been to Manaus before (one Brasileiro and one gringo) and of course, in July when I go to Brasil, I'll do a reconnaissance type of trip to Manaus.

Stay tuned. [Image: wink.gif]

Brandon, you're right that Joinville is a cute little town always ready to party. But the king of party towns in the south of Brasil is Floripa. Surf, Sex and weed seems to be the motto of the town. [Image: wink.gif] And as mentioned before, as you venture out to smaller cities of the interior, your fun factor is multiplied by 100, but lingo is required there.

I tend to be skeptical of claims about any one city having "the horniest women in the country", but since it seems to be consistently reported about Manaus, I'm looking forward to the trip reports.

Speaking of Manaus, just saw that there are direct flights from the US from Atalanta with Delta. It's a relatively short flight, (6h42minutes) and also direct flights again from Atalanta to Fortaleza with Delta (about 8 hours). That's an awesome thing as it cuts on the long flight if were to go through GIG or GRU. [Image: smile.gif]

Florianopolis was awesome as far as beaches and scenery, but as far as partying, I just didn't dig it. I wasn't really there during peak season and the kid I was staying with wasn't a big partier. I wish I would have gone another time of the year and with some other friends that partied a little more. Definitely didn't have the hottest women either in my opinion like everyone else thinks. The women in Vitoria were A LOT hotter. I almost think Minas and even Sao Paulo were better than Floripa.

Those miss context are always ridiculous as the gilrs selected are just ok at best. I was watching Miss Brasil last year and I was like, holly crap, I see 10 times more beautiful girls everyday on the streets, malls and universities in Rio or Curitiba or Brasilia than on this so called Miss Brasil show.

Yeah, those "Miss. Whatever" contest seem to never represent how the country REALLY looks. The only ones that I think SOMEWHAT do are ANY "miss colombia" contest. Take a look.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQ6t33YHo...re=related Guess it helps that I like chics with fake asses and tits..lol.

Funny part about it is I know the chic at :30 sec. and she appears again at 3:31 she is a hooker here in Panama...lol. Really cool girl though, and fucking AMAZING LOOKING in person. That being said the girls in Brazil are WAY cooler and LESS conservative that the colombiana chicas. Once again Brazil wins by a long shot! BUT they are NOT properly represented in those "miss Brazil" things.

For anyone going to Brasilia or Curitiba or any city in Brasil, a total goldmine as far as not only making some good contacts there (both guys and girls) and to know what's going on and which are the places to check and all, is to sign up for Orkut and do a search there for "name of city+baladas" (balada in Brasil is clubbing) and you'll have all the info you want about the clubs, events and places that are bombing and happening. I just did it for fun in Brasilia and came up with 1000s of matches for communities that cater to the party scene in BSB.

Enjoy![Image: smile.gif]
