This kind of interesting. I could be wrong. I'm still sort of high from surgery this morning.

Yeah it does. However I think the current generation are going to make awful parents. More interested in their fucking phones than taking their kid to museums etc.

When a child is splitting their time between two parents as has become increasingly common, the natural reaction of the parents is to win the affection of the child by spoiling them. Oh, you had fun at daddy's place but it's boring here? Well let mommy take you shopping. See how mommy treats you better than daddy. Then the child works over daddy, leading to some pretty spoiled children. The parents aren't always working together in the best interest of the child.

Just an observation.

Y'all should check out this book. I still need to check it out from the library or order it but it looks great.

Does anyone think cell phones, Facebook, Twitter, dating sites, etc has a good sized impact on narcissism in 2013?

Houston, I read it and it is scary! They propose the main pillars of narcissism being parenting, easy credit, delusional tv and commercials... Guess what gender is found to be most susceptible...

You are Not Special Graduation Speech
This was awesome:

"...all of this is as it should be, because none of you is special.
You are not special. You are not exceptional.
Contrary to what your u9 soccer trophy suggests, your glowing seventh grade report card, despite every assurance of a certain corpulent purple dinosaur, that nice Mister Rogers and your batty Aunt Sylvia, no matter how often your maternal caped crusader has swooped in to save you… you're nothing special.

Yes, you've been pampered, cosseted, doted upon, helmeted, bubble-wrapped. Yes, capable adults with other things to do have held you, kissed you, fed you, wiped your mouth, wiped your bottom, trained you, taught you, tutored you, coached you, listened to you, counseled you, encouraged you, consoled you and encouraged you again. You've been nudged, cajoled, wheedled and implored. You've been feted and fawned over and called sweetie pie. Yes, you have. And, certainly, we've been to your games, your plays, your recitals, your science fairs. Absolutely, smiles ignite when you walk into a room, and hundreds gasp with delight at your every tweet. Why, maybe you've even had your picture in the Townsman! And now you've conquered high school… and, indisputably, here we all have gathered for you, the pride and joy of this fine community, the first to emerge from that magnificent new building…

But do not get the idea you're anything special. Because you're not.

The empirical evidence is everywhere, numbers even an English teacher can't ignore. Newton, Natick, Nee… I am allowed to say Needham, yes? …that has to be two thousand high school graduates right there, give or take, and that's just the neighborhood Ns. Across the country no fewer than 3.2 million seniors are graduating about now from more than 37,000 high schools. That's 37,000 valedictorians… 37,000 class presidents… 92,000 harmonizing altos… 340,000 swaggering jocks… 2,185,967 pairs of Uggs."

Nice find. Great quote from that book:
"Apparently, our culture has decided to go with the strategy of boosting the fantasy of success rather than success itself, similar to the amplifiers in the movie Spinal Tap that “go to eleven.”

I once brought up the "You are not special" video to a bunch of former coworkers. You would had thought that I had a leg sticking out of my ass with the way they were looking at me. Plus, it looked like I crushed one their souls.

For evidence of what the article in the OP is talking about, just log on to facebook or twitter( if you actually have either).

I would add dating sites, Facebook, Twitter, etc to that list. I don't know if it's making girls delusional once they log off or if it's only online...

I know a younger guy, who growing up was raised under the church of self-esteem 'just be yourself, it's good enough!' bullshit, spoiled rotten (from a family that's hardly 'rich'; sure, they have a decent house in a respectable neighborhood, but give me ten minutes with their papers and I could find at least $100,000 of debt), never pushed to excel in school, never pushed into playing sports and never asked to do anything to help around the house.

Describe him in a sentence? I thought you'd never ask;

Simultaneously of the belief that the sun shines out of his ass and addicted to Facebook, but lacking in any life skills of any value and therefore incapable of getting a job that pays higher than minimum wage (he's 20).

The leading culprits; shitty new-age 'let the kid make his own decisions and bail him out when he fucks up!' parenting, the overall pussification of society, social networking and the advancement of technology in the last 10 years.

Two good things about this though:

1) You can use it all to your advantage.
2) It is going to stop eventually because the economy can't support 99% of people living like the Kardashians. The roaring sound of all these lost souls crashing back down to earth will happen as soon as the average provider starts having to go hungry. With the economy's current course, this won't be long.

1) How, exactly?

2) I look forward to a radical re-ordering of priorities once all the debt comes home to roost and the non-productive bullshit industries that allow many of these mutant spawn to earn a living wage all crash.
