If you lift with gloves you're a puss IMO.

Have you ever seen a rower's hands? They get demolished. But past a certain point, the skin toughens and they learn to ignore blisters. Same with lifts.

I just tear off the hanging skin and keep going. If you squeeze the bar tight enough, it doesn't hurt. Look up "gate control theory of pain"

I like to believe that too but it's not true. Those who have "crocodile"-like skin are usually people who did manual labour for a lot of years like my dad (he really doesn't feel any pain even with fire) or guys who take heavy lifting in the gym as their job. I go to the gym only 3 times a week which doesn't toughen my skin.

I wish my hands were stronger so I rotate my gloves out now quite a bit. I wear them only when doing dead lifts and shoulder lifts but I do find the pain helps me focus more since I forget about the scorching pain in my muscles and focus on the stinging pain in my hands. You get used to it but if you need something that is cheap just get some foam or cut a hand towel into two pieces and use that.

If you are ripping callouses, you're gripping the bar wrong. If you are bruising your hands, you're doing it wrong.

I can deadlift 2.89x my bodyweight without gloves or straps and never have callouses ripping off on their own. Well, not anymore, anyways, after I learned how to grip the bar correctly. Watch and learn. Chalk and proper grip make all the difference.

Is this really causing you that much pain?? I don't have rough, sandpaper hands and I barely even feel the callouses.

Every time I've had a guy with gloves spot me on the bench press, he'd do a terrible job. He would step in and start groping the bar before I could get my last reps in. There's a large overlap between dudes who don't know how to spot and dudes who wear gloves...

I avoid asking glove wearers to spot me. If no one else is around, I give them firm instructions not to step in unless the bar is going down one the concentric phase.

No offense guys, but if your hands haven't ripped like this every so often then you aren't training very hard.

This particular workout involved hanging power cleans and muscle ups. Your hands will rip at some point if you're training dynamic exercises. Chalk, shaving your calluses down, and luck are then only things that prevent and eventual tear.
