My personal theory on this...they know if they don't, their woman will leave.
A certain percent of guys (probably a majority know what alpha means) could do the alpha thing, and the woman would not respond favorably, and these guys know the dating world isn't easy for men. So, they fall into a cycle of beta, even when they know they're being beta as hell.
There's some guys who can almost always be alpha, and it works. Although usually they are just that appealing off the bat, not even regarding how alpha they are. Think of the guys in high school EVERY chick wanted.
The most alpha guys in my opinion are white trash guys who use intimidation and the occasional slap-around. I'm not advocating that in any way, but those guys have a way of keeping their women close. They don't tolerate bullshit, and their women know it. So do bikers.
