Katrina on the Atlantic -- The Third World Has Come to You

A major disaster occurs on the outskirts of one of the most advanced civilizations on earth, and 10 days later there are victims struggling to get food...and Doctors Without Borders has helicoptered in...

Quote:Quote:

After traveling six miles by foot and by bus to bring food home to her five children in Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood, Cherry Barnett broke down in tears....

. . ."A lot of us out here are fighting for our lives,” said Feliciano, 51. “A lot of people are desperate. They don't know where they are getting their next meal.

"We are fighting amongst ourselves here because we are tired. And we are frustrated."

I believe they set up tented areas, with portable lights and paper ballots for people in many affected areas to vote. I'm sure some people weren't able to get there because they probably had other issues to deal with, but some were able to vote.

I can give a first hand account of what I've seen on the ground in the Rockaways and lower Manhattan if anyone would be interested. Don't have time to elaborate much now, but I would have some time this evening. I volunteered out in the Rockaways earlier this week and lived down in Fi Di this weekend.

In short, it's not good. It's worse than I'd ever imagine. It's not a be OK in a few days, or weeks situation. We're talking years, if at all. The fundamental design of certain neighborhoods will be rethought, if they're ever rebuilt at all.

Tenderman, knock it off, you whiny old bastard.

There is no reason to compare Sandy to Katrina. 10 days after Katrina there were 100's dead bodies floating around New Orleans. People were waiting for Oprah to come save them because they knew your Republican wasn't going to do shit.

Stop your fear mongering Fox News bullshit. Your people got their asses handed to them. They are done.

Why not start a "Happy Veterans Day" thread to thank the guys on this forum for their service to the country that allows you to type your bullshit. Or to thank the ones that responded to Katrina a few weeks after everybody bitched at your man George Bush about it? I know you won't, so I will. You don't know anything about what it means. All you know how to do is bitch about what the military, and government, does, or has done.

Grow some balls old man.

I grew up in the Rockaways. Our basement flooded quite a few times. There are places out there, if you were dropped off with no idea where you were, you would never think that you were in New York City. I have a friend from Breezy Point who used to hitchhike to school.

You really pissed me off Tenderman.

Since you want to compare the two here's an interesting statistic: 75 people have died so far from Sandy. 1800 plus died from Katrina. Here's your people saying it:http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/10/31/sup...ry-begins/

Some guys on this forum were part of the Katrina relief effort when they were serving in the US Navy (the one that fought in those wars) and got to see the stuff first hand that you saw on Fox News and laughed at.

That Hawaiian President you hate (and we all know why) is kicking ass taking care of the people affected by Sandy. Deal with it.

You are a sorry son of a bitch for starting this thread.

To the point I doubt your even real. You are probably some slut right out of college one of the PAC's hired to troll forums and try to sway some opinions. Now you're worried about keeping your job so you can buy more Fashion Bug shit sweety.

Do you think some political action group would put a plant on here to sell their shit?

If you look at all Tenderman's posts it seems almost obvious.

A bunch of right wing crap, and then some pictures of old women to give it some credibility.

Wow, more so, since it's all old ladies in the pictures, leads me to believe they got some intern girl right out of college doing it.

Back when I started on this forum people would ask if I was the Hawaii tourism Authority. Some right wing action group putting up a stool pigeon-type seems much more plausible.

I doubt it. He is just a grumpy old guy who is shell shocked by Romney's loss. These people live in the Fox/Limbaugh echo chamber. They were absolutely certain that Romney was going to win, they were lied to and made fools out of by the right wing media and now they are flailing and lashing out.

The good guys won. Relax. Let tenderman and his ilk burn with anger. Instead of getting mad, just rub salt into their wounds and troll them back.

Think about this, the whole might of the capitalist establishment, half a dozen billionaires getting together to do everything in their power to take Obama out, and STILL they lost. That's got to burn. Just enjoy the spectacle of the massive clusterfuck that is the Right wing right now.

I wonder what Tendermans thoughts were during Katrina when it was affecting a lot more people, and it took DAYS to get anyone in there.

I understand you're not happy about the election results, but you should really calm down with these right-wing posts. Yes, what's happening out east is a tragedy and we really should be better prepared, but you can't compare this to Katrina. The response to Katrina was an absolute failure.

This is just a silly context to begin with. First of all, just because we have smartphones doesn't make us that "advanced". Very few of our technological advancements are developed to preempt tragedy or protect ourselves from nature.

Second, I doubt we'll ever be able to really protect ourselves anyway. We as a species, and ESPECIALLY in this culture, are incredibly conceited as far as our place on this earth. All of the resources that we spend to create this bubble of comfort and luxury can be wiped out in a tiny little global fart.

Major disaster? Not really, just earth doing its thing. Earth is in a relatively temperate and gentle state right now.

And on the politics front, if the government comes in to help these folks out, use some of their allocated funds that come from taxpayers, wouldn't that be just a little, well, socialist?

If Tenderslut really is an old man and not an intern girl blowing her way to the top, this thread is just classic old whitefolks racism and he should be thrown off this forum once and for all.

These people's arguments are just over in America.

Here's their thought process:

"This President isn't doing enough about hurricane Sandy"- even though what they did about Katrina was way worse.

"This President is ruining the economy"- even though what they did is way worse.

"This President lied about Benghazi terror attacks" - even though what they said about 9/11 is way worse.

It makes you think of this:

"White people make guns and thousands of people get shot. Black people rap about guns - congressional investigation!"

If people like Tenderwhore100 would just come out and say "I don't like black people, and it pisses me off to no end that one is President of MY America" at least they'd get a little of my respect for saying what they think.

Tenderman, quit hiding your racist shit behind a bunch of bullshit double talk.

And sending me private messages.

GROW SOME BALLS OLD MAN!!!!!

No.

But only a complete dumbass, or a right-wing fearmongering racist would say that Sandy is anything like Katrina.

Since you've said in other threads how smart you are, and I've concluded you are a recent college grad/slut interning at some political action committee somewhere, it's not nice to call you a dumbass.

One should then assume this thread is more of your right-wing fearmongering racist crap, since there are no pictures of sassy looking old ladies.

How dare you compare a hurricane to a hurricane! You must be a racist!

Seriously, read the forum rules and quit the personal attacks. You can disagree on here all day long but the straight up insults are immature. You shouldn't be having a meltdown over what's posted on the internets.

I mean really, if we're to the point that democrats and republicans hate each other like mortal enemies then we're fucked as a country.

I had dinner last night with friends who are liberal democrats, we disagree on a lot of things but we don't hate each other and there's no way a political disagreement would ever come between us.

Its not a left or right issue. Its a issue that Govt and its Bureaucracy is to inept to deal with disasters like this. Aside from what happen to the Jersey Cost Sandy was an aggressive storm and not much more, we have seen comparables to this such as the Quebec Icestorms or aggressive flooding that took place in the Dakota's/Plains about 10 years back. Its not a partisan issue its a issue of systems simply not working and them never being prepared to deal with shit like this. The type of stuff officials have been pulling during Sandy is laughable they really could not cut them selves out of a cardboard box if they were given scissors and a flashlight... its just that simple.

This isn't a stance against Government nor one for it. The left and right squabble on this point when the basics are left alone. The system simply does not work and people really just need to take steps to ensure their families, communities and most importantly themselves are taking care of and in a good position to deal with shit when it happens to break down.

Not buying it. Gov't can handle stuff like this---just look at the Japan disaster last year. If we seriously invested in preparing for these kinds of problems then the gov't would be able to handle these issues.

I suspect that with the GOP in the political wilderness for the next little while, the gov'ts ability to handle natural disasters will improve. It will take time, but we'll learn---probably sending experts to learn from hated socialist Europeans like the Dutch who've have lived under constant threat of storm and flood for centuries. Ask them if government works when it comes to mitigating the effects of catastrophe.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flood_contr...etherlands

The entire article is about shit that the gov't does to make sure disaster doesn't take place.

Gov't doesn't work in this country because it is too often run by people who are busy trying to destroy it. That is changing---as will the efficacy of the gov't in natural disaster-type situations.
