Spending this weekend in Austin for a long weekend and wanted to see if anyone had rec's for nightlife. I've read up on 6th st. and it seems a little too douche-tastic for me as we are all in our early 30's. then again, I guess if there are cute UT coeds around, I can easily get over this hang up. Would appreciate any and all local input.

Looking forward to checking out some decent live music and excited about heading to Lockhart for BBQ.

Go to West 6th as there are more hangouts for young professionals such as yourself. Regular west 6th is more along the lines of douchey "dive bars" that charge cover and full of "kiddos." West 6th is a lot nicer, and be sure to visit a place called Molotov that's two stories, has a nice outdoor patio on 2nd floor, etc. Have fun!

Check out the Ranch, Dogwood, 219 West, Key Bar. These are all on West 6th st and have an older crowd and should be good Thursdays-Saturday. For Sunday day drinking check out Kung Fu Saloon

Dirty 6th is worth going to as well, check it out on Thursday night when's it's packed with drunk college kids. Best places are probably Shakespeare's (which has $5 pitchers on Thurs) and Blind Pig. Saturday's aren't bad on Dirty either. If you hate Dirty 6th, West 6th is only a 10-15 minute walk away.

Eating wise checkout Torchy's, Lamberts, Franklin's BBQ(Long ass wait), Taco Deli.

Good advice from BTman. Just to add on to that, it has been a few months since I've been there, but I lived there for about 6 years. I would definitely suggest W.6th as well. You can basically start at the intersection of 6th and West and just bar crawl all the way down there. Definitely hit up 219W, The Ranch, Brew Exchange and Kung Fu Saloon. (Definitely do Sunday funday at Kung Fu)

As far as E. 6th St. (Aka dirty 6th) I personally hate it, but if you're visiting the city, you might as well give it a shot. I would definitely suggest going to Blind Pig, which pretty much always has some sort of crowd. Arcade room is hit or miss, but can sometimes have some talent.

There are some hotties during school season on dirty 6th, but just be prepared for cockblocking of monumental proportions by their 'girlfriends and beta orbiter guy 'friends'... Also, a lot of the girls are extremely young (18-19) and are just pretending to be whores. Sometimes it is surprisingly hard to bang them because they either get way too drunk, way too fast, or just cock tease all night. When you do close one they're usually terrible in bed.

So, yeah, stick to W. 6th on Thurs, Fri, Sat for sure. Hit up dirty 6th when all else fails.

Austin is a great city, although much better in the summer, you should still have a great time.

I can't believe you guys are all recommending West 6th. He is about to walk into sausage fest and bachelorette party hell over there. It didn't used to be like that so maybe your info is old. New bars open here frequently and everyone wants to go to the new ones. The newest bars are all on Rainey St. which isn't far from downtown. That's where I would go. Also the W hotel bar is good.

Care to share bar names on Rainey, scallleywag? I was just at the W Hotel to go get po boys at Turf and Surf today on 4th and Congress. Great food! Also stopped by The Ginger Man pub and was impressed with the number of taps on hand if not for the talent pool. Then again, it was 2:30pm on a Friday afternoon.

Rainey street is legit, but parking around there is absolutely terrible.

Start at Lustre Pearl and work your way down the street. They're all right next to each other.

West 6th can get douchey too, but I've pulled some seriously hot trim from there.

If you go to West 6th, I'd start at either Key Bar or Dog Wood. I haven't drank down there for a while, but I used to start at Dog Wood ALL the time and get numbers and/or pull from there. It does get crowded and can be full of tools, but that's why is so damn easy.

Jay Blacks is popular, but that place is rife with cock blockers.

This is what I'd do:

Grab a drink at Key Bar, scope out the scene. If it's legit, hang out for a bit. There's fly ladies in there from time to time. Move to Dog Wood, repeat. From there, move to Molotov, and if you don't have luck there, go to one of the places across with street. Your chances of getting c-blocked are higher, but there's plenty of drunk floozies in those places.

Hey guys,

Great tips on Rainey St! Went there last night with my friends and had a fantastic time. I was really surprised by how friendly everyone was and the talent level was relatively good. Chatted up quite a few coeds from Texas St. and UT and ended up with a Messican girl who was out in a group selling cologne (of all things) to drunk guys stumbling out of bars. Flowers, bacon wrapped hot dogs, yes... but cologne? Never seen that shit before!

Also pleasantly surprised how pro-Asian the white girls were here. I must've been hit up 5-6 times last night by different white chicks throughout the night. This shit never happens in LA so it was a nice little ego boost. Looking forward to checking out 6th tonight, will follow Alpha Minds itinerary.

Barbarella is a bit of a hookup spot. Its a dance club with a huge patio out back and even a 2nd story bar as well. It's on Red River just north of 6th street. It's a little more hippy, but I've heard about hookups from the dance floor, etc.

The center of 6th (not west 6th) itself has been called dead 6th because there can be such large groups and chaos that girls go into defense mode. But hooking up is very possible. Check out "jackalope'. There is a nice patio out back that connects to the next bar also. In fact, almost every bar has a patio out back that often is packed with people.

Around closing time there are crowds of early 20's women that seem to congregate on the street in front of the Asian club just off 6th. I can't remember the name but it's like 90% asians inside.

I found hooking up in Austin to be really difficult despite a good wingman and centrally located apartment.

I'd say I put in 30-35 approaches and got one make out from the whole thing. No matter what girls were out in large groups which made it really difficult.

I could see Austin being great if you live there, but it's deceptively difficult to a causal passerby.

Rainey is definitely cool and I'd go there over 6th. There was a bar with all sorts of cubicles on the second level and a large open area on the ground floor that I liked the best for talking to girls.

The whole town is littered with food trucks. I think they are excellent places to open girls. They are on rainey and east 6th has a whole food truck park in front of cheer up charlies.
