Born on April 12, 1950, in Cuneo, Italy, Flavio Briatore has always been a charismatic, cunning businessman and began his career in restaurant management. In the 1970s, his career veered into work at the Italian stock exchange and it was during this period that he befriended Luciano Benetton, creator of the Benetton clothing company.
When Benetton began to open stores in the United States, the clothing magnate appointed Briatore director of the company's American operations. Briatore became managing director of Benetton Formula and it took only a few years for the adept manager to sculpt the team, as Michael Schumacher, racing for Benetton, won the Drivers Championship in 1994.
Briatore then continued to make his mark on Formula 1, but, by 1997, the Benetton team had slipped after losing Schumacher to Ferrari and so, owner Luciano Benetton fired his friend.
When not selling Renault engines as a new venture, Briatore was famous for cavorting with Naomi Campbell and Adriana Volpe before fathering his only child with Heidi Klum in 2004. Career-wise, Briatore returned to F1 as managing director of Renault in 2000 and has led the team to a successful run in 2005.

Benetton was known more for it's cutting-edge/controversial ad campaigns than anything else here in the US. They were true to the "United Colors" theme in that they always featured people of different colors and cultures, and their most controversial ad featured a dying AIDS patient in a hospital bed.
