Getting a Visa to stay long term in colombia
10-21-2012, 09:26 PM
Hi guys, I want to be able to base myself in colombia for the next few years.
My business is online so working is not an issue but could I get some work or student visa here, maybe pretend to be an english teacher or something. Basically whatever is easiest.
Any advise on what to do would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks in advance
Jack

To get an investment visa you need to prove you have $30,000. You don't necessarily have to invest it, just have it.
For a work visa you'll have to get hired by an institute (or other company willing to sponsor your visa), which will want you to actually work. I don't recommend teaching English for institutes.
For a student's visa you'll have to register for classes at a university. I believe it has to be full-time study.
I recommend overstaying on a tourist visa. There's a fine, but you just pay it. If you only leave once, you only pay it once, so it depends on how often you want to visit home or other countries. Most of my expat buddies stay for years on tourist visas, pay the max fine, and just come back.
If you want a visa, I have a connection in Medellin that can help with sketchy requirements. Contact me through my site if interested.

the normal visa is 90 days. What would be the fine if you stayed like....8 months?
