Statement of Work

I am on the tip of being hired for a project. I need to do a Statement of Work. Never done it before.

Can anyone give any pointers and tips on how to initially break it down the Statement of Work for the client.

I have been googling but additional pointers would be appreciated. The project is regarding a software installation and implementation.

Thanks,

Moma

Clearly list the previous work you have done that is specifically relevant to the work that the client wants you to do. Show them that you have alot of experience doing exactly what they now need you to do.

No, that is not what a Statement of Work is. What you are describing sounds like a resume or a cover letter.

A Statement of Work is something where you assess how long a project will take so that you can justify the rate you charge them and the time frame estimated to complete it.

It covers stages, possible delays and so forth. I just wanted further insight on this so that I could put forth a polished one to the client.

That is PM talk, head to the local bookstore or library and look at some project management books. PMBOK is a good book to do research.

Make sure you are very clear about the cost, schedule, and deliverables.

Come to an agreement with the client on performance/acceptance criteria. (i.e. the criteria they use to determine your deliverables meet their requirements)

Be very clear about special needs from the client - office space, equipment, hosting space, whatever.

Insert some language about how additional requirements (scope creep) will be handled.

You're better off breaking things down to the lowest level of detail possible to ensure everyone has a very clear understanding of what needs to be delivered, the time and cost under which it is delivered, and the "things" it must do when it's delivered.

Some people say the Bible is easier to read than the PMBOK...especially for someone who isn't a PMP.

You got your PMP?
Yeah that book is brutal to read.
Hope to get certified by end of year.
