I don't know how to dance properly, as I never looked at dancing as a manly thing. However, not knowing to dance has cost me a lot of women, and I am finally eager to take some dance lessons, but is it really worth it? The 10-week Salsa classes are about $200 at City Academy.

Being a good dancer is not a guarantee to become a good player, however it's never an impediment also in Mexico, South America and more recently (believe or not) in Russia. Just take the classes, Salsa is a fantastic physical therapy. However, I wonder how much, you, guys, do Salsa dancing in England. Are you sure those fat, slutty English 'ladies' like to dance? Are we talking about the same dancing, anyway?

Straight up: HELL YES.
One of the best things I ever did was learn how to dance. Not only do you look better on the dance floor, it gives you confidence. You also increase the possibilities for dates. You can have little one-on-one lessons in which you teach them some moves or if she knows how to dance you can go work it up together.
A few years ago, I would hit up craigslist in DC and post in the "strictly platonic" section about wanting to find female friends interested in learning how to dance (I pretended like I knew nothing about salsa). I would get so many replies from women and you'd be surprised how quickly they forgot about the "platonic" part. Worst case, you remain friends and you get access to their friends. Women love a guy who can dance.

As a heads up you should study salsa based on where you are going to travel. I have taken lots of classes in Cuba and know quite a few combinations....I went to a class in Canada that I believe was LA style and I was completely stumped. I left after 1 class realizing that it wasn't what I was looking for. I'd also like to add that the good salsa dancers were far from scoring like crazy. Most girls will dance one song with them and then book it back to their friends. Maybe it's good for getting that common ground / introduction. But wicked salsa dancing is not a get laid fast technique.

started dancing linear aka puerto rican and then took up cuban. still dance both but p rican only cause its so much more popular in north america. if that wasn't the case, i wouldn't even bother with it.
cuban is a lot more fun, natural, and the music is better. The video above isn't a great example. I also like that cuban is closer to the african roots of salsa

I don't feel like writing a whole fucking post on salsa, but cuban-style salsa is not nearly as impressive as well-done LA or NY style salsa. You may "have more fun," but you'll be having that fun at home with your dick in your hand. If your goal is to use salsa to improve your game--while having a good time out--do yourself a favor and get some ballroom-style grounding (LA/NY style). This is the style that is most known all over the world. Cuban style has its enclaves, but it's not as universal. It's like the difference between speaking the dialect of a language, or speaking the master version of it.
Cuban style is hokey, back-yard party style salsa. Casino rueda--which is danced in a big circle of couples, for instance--is basically Latin-style square dancing, complete with calls. It's goofy. It doesn't hurt to learn some of those body movements (if you truly want to be a well-rounded dancer), because those are vastly superior, but it's good to have good leading skills and flourish. The worst is a ballroom-style dancer who has no rhythms and whose body is as stiff as a board.
Ideally, you will pick up elements from various styles of Latin dance, but you should start with LA/NY style.

Agree that it would be best to start with LA/NY living stateside simply due to numbers.
Disagree with most of your other points. Not sure US of A is the best place to see good cuban salsa dancing. Certainly not hokey of goofy. If anything, guys dancing LA style far more likely to look gay

@ vorkuta seems you have the right approach...learning a few moves can get you in the door with girls. no need to be john travolta
as for length of time, depends on if your lessons are private or group. obviously the latter takes longer. with group lessons maybe 10-15 lessons.
you may wanna know more than 5 moves, enough to get you through a song with boring her. unless she's a complete newb

Learning salsa is useful for dancing salsa. If the places you actually go out play top 40, hip hop or electronic music, salsa isn't going to change much.
10 lessons and no practice will put you at late stage beginner. You'll know the rhythm for salsa and merengue, the basic step and a few moves. But don't forget, the guys that are really good took years and years to get that way.
What you will get from it is:
a) get out of your comfort zone, conquer your apprehension and find out you enjoyed doing it
b) loosen you up and move your hips more
c) be able to dance one song at a Latin themed place. If you want to dance a second song, you'll be doing it with the exact same moves as the first song.
To really dominate at a salsa place, it's more than being a good dancer. You need to understand Spanish language. The reason you need language is because you also need to be familiar with thousands of salsa songs, and understand the feeling behind each song.

My take on this is to learn Salsa if you can support a lifestyle that can sustain it! Trust me, this is a hard technical dance that needs years to master.
If I see you are weak in Salsa trying to game the girls, guess what? I just take her with no apprehension and run my game which she will find more satisfying. You are competing in an uneven field with the better male dancers at the top.
One more thing. Do not count on Salsa as your 'gaming-machine' because you will need actual game to convert! No game and high Salsa level equals nothing -- I see it all the time with beta dancers who I bet does not get pussy.
Think of Salsa as having a ROI. Learn it only if you are confident you can get bangs from it, drop it early and focus on other skills (approach skils) if you can't see yourself in it.

This man tells the truth. Salsa club is a magic place, you dont even need to speak a lot to get results.
As a guy who is a part of the dancing scene I can assure you you are not going to get laid because you can dance. I have observed people through out years, who is hooking up with who. Most hot girls who come to dances have a boyfriend at home who can't dance for shit. He waits for his gf to come home all horny from all the dancing and fuck her. And all the dancing monkey guys go home alone.
Just sit in the car after a dance event and see all those guys go home alone...

Your best chance to get laid is if you are a newbie and hitting up new girls who may not even come back. Also, if you go dancing to a club - act the same as in a normal club. Salsa clubs sell very little alcohol as most dancers don't drink. This might be even better for a pua who don't drink as you don't need to pretend you have a drink.

My experience has been that ballroom dancing (salsa, waltz, swing etc.) skills are a lot of fun if you go to places specifically for ballroom dancing i.e. not clubs or bars. If you don't go to one of these places, it is highly unlikely that you will go to a place where they play appropriate music for ballroom dancing. The only exception is swing and hustle which can be danced to just about every rock and pop song. Additionally very few people in America know how to dance so finding a dance partner will be difficult at a club/bar.
