Grip strength

I've never understood the hate for straps; I use them for all my heavy deadlifts, bent over rows and shrugs.

I shrug 300kg for 3 sets of 8-10 reps...I don't think my grip strength will ever be strong enough to do that without straps.

Grip strength

I use straps as well for my heavy deadlifts and farmers walks but I'm trying to use them less and less to build grip strength.

Good call on the Fat Gripz, rhodey.

It might also help to pick up Ross Enamait's newest ebook Untapped Strength which is all about forearm and grip training.

My grip isn't too bad, I can close a 200 lb hand gripper. That's a generic one though, so it probably is not as "good" as the Captains of Crush.

What I usually do is once or twice a week, hang from a bar for a twenty minutes and do as many pullups as possible. Only let go of the bar if you absolutely have to. If you can't do a pullup, just hang from the bar. Really focus on spending as much time on the bar as possible.

Give it a couple months and you won't have any problems with your grip. It's not a bad idea to do some fingertip pushups afterwards (or whatever forearm extensor work you'd like to do).

According to Mark Rippletoe you should be able to DL more than you SQ.

1. As someone pointed out earlier, use a hook grip. It's normal that it will be painful at first.
2. Do not use an alternate grip. Use a double overhand grip until you can at least DL 2.5 times your body weight then consider straps.
3. Use chalk. You can usually buy some from adventure sport stores that cater to rock climbers or online.
