9 years was very likely the last time this guy got laid. No money at the very least means no grooming or being able to "provide". And we all know that an ungroomed man may as well become monk (or live in a cave in Utah like this guy).
I do believe that not letting money control your life is defintely something to accomplish, but by all means make enough to have a decent lifestyle.
There is a guy who has a book out called the four hour work week. Interesting reading on a lifestyle that enables you to make money, all while you spend 50% of your time enjoying your life.
He has traveled to Argentina, chartered private planes, and even driven ferraris living a " diddy" lifestyle all while making less that 100k per year.
Being poor sux as stated by Roosh, but making a comfortable $$$ amount without being a modern day slave to corporate America and bang new punani cosistently every month - priceless!
