Yeah, it's a cover of the closing track on Jackson's 1979 album 'Look Sharp!'

If you listen to most songs being played on the radio today, you'll notice they generally fall under two categories:

1.) Beta Love Ballads
2.) Bitter/Self-Entitled Chick Anthems

The guys will sing about how "perfect" their woman supposedly is, how she's a "goddess" who deserves worship, how they wouldn't change a thing about her because she's just the best thing that's ever happened to them. Blah, blah, blah.

The girls will sing about how they got fucked over by some guy and now they're going to get him back for "doing them wrong". His likely "sins"? Supposedly taking her for granted, cheating on her, etc. Alternately, she'll sing about her supposedly amazing sexual prowess (while we're not supposed to be objectifying her, of course, because #Patriarchy). Additionally, she'll be sure to add-in how impossibly sexy she is, independent, strong, smart, pretty much better than you in every possible way and how basically you'd be lucky to even catch a whiff of one of her farts, etc.

Can you imagine the outrage if a man were to start singing songs about how most women don't deserve him? How they should possess a certain series of physical qualities/character traits and even possibly an IQ prerequisite for them to think they even had a chance to temporarily capture his interest, forget about ever tying him down for life. Unless that artist did some serious pandering to women after that, he'd very likely soon find his career cut short. A woman, on the other hand, would likely receive critical acclaim for songs sung from the perspective of men not being good enough for women.

I'm just gobsmacked at the incredible popularity of several tunes that I can only describe as "cock carousel to cat lady" anthems.

Take the fatty Adele. Two of her biggest hits "hello" and "someone like you" are essentially ballads about a dumb bitch who wakes up one day to find her labia has stretched past her knees and then laments about ditching Mr Right and leaving him in the dust all those years ago.

I was flipping through a book on the band earlier, and this struck me as the most GAMMA song on the planet.

The difference is the intensity of the fantasy and the remove from women. A Beta can have White Knight fantasies or write about how burnt they've been by women, sure, but Gammas are different.

If they're hurt, then they become women: the song becomes all about the depth of emotional betrayal and how hurt and victimised they are. A gamma could never write a song like, say, Abba: "Neither you nor I'm too blame when all is said and done".

Of course, when they sing a love song, it sounds like how devoted they are, but rather than putting a woman on a pedestal ala Beta, they build a fucking delusional shrine to her.

It's a shame, I can't criticise this musically or performance wise, but note the creepy supplication of those lyrics. Also, note the sexist assumption that women aren't complex human beings with both negatives and positives but are sacred and infalliable.

I wonder if his family background fits my theory about Gammas?

It's funny, I listened to the NIN song a lot at 17 or so, and, much in the same way as, say, the Cure, I didn't hear the weakness. I listened to it now on my headphones and wanted to facepalm.
