So last night I was out and met a big mixed group of international folks, all studying abroad here.
After a gorgeous Mexican girl had trouble at the bar ordering a "two x," I was so kind as to explain to her that, even in English we say "dos equis," and we started chatting. She was into my Spanish, travels, dancing, and everything was going great. A real friendly conversation with no bitchiness from her. She asked me "You're so friendly, why aren't Americans this friendly always? I never meet friendly people like you!"
Anyway, we talked for maybe 45 minutes just us two, danced some reggaeton, having a good time. It was early in the night, maybe 10:30, and everyone had just started drinking.
My American thinking dictated that I start flirting and dancing with all the girls in the group. The rest were cute Brazilians, pretty but not as killer as the Mexican chick, who was my goal.
Long story short, I ended up being the social butterfly, thinking it made me look like the shit, dancing salsa with the Brazilian chicks, spitting Portuguese, Spanish, French, whatever, thinking I was building up my value.
But all this time my real target was more and more arinconada with this one dude in the corner. She was friendly, and would dance and talk with whoever, but more and more was just talking with this one guy, not really dancing or drinking too much.
I excused myself for a breather, not thinking much of it, and I come back and she's making out with him. I redirect my attention towards a cute Brazilian, and we start making out. Soon it's a big multilingual makeout party all over.
But I blew it with the stunning chick I really wanted by bouncing around. My idea is that, with a genuinely friendly latina, the American style of creating jealousy and acting disinterested goes over their heads.
She didn't try to grab my attention away from the Brazilian chicks. She thought I was genuinely more interested in dancing with the Brazilians than talking with her, so found a guy who would talk with her all night, and they ended up together. Which makes sense in a non-crazy (non-American) mindframe.
So when you find yourself having a nice friendly convo with a cute latina who's showing no bitchiness or anything, do you generally think its best to just focus all your attention on them instead of playing the social butterfly a lo gringo? Seems to me that's what happened. Showing real interest, as opposed to acting disinterested, could actually be rewarded. Amazing concept...
