North America Travel Recommendations

At the end of September I will be moving to North America for a year on a working visa, but in the beginning I would like to see as much of the country as possible. I am early 20s, from New Zealand, average to good looking.
Imagine one of your good friends came to visit the States and told you he had 3 months to see as many cities/sights as he could, what would be the top 5-10 things you could recommend?

I'll be starting off in San Diego, so that will be my home base. Landing at the end of September.
I have a year in Canada planned starting end of 2013.

How far you trying venture? Maybe carve out sections and drive between spots. Buy a shit car in each section then burn it, or give it to El Mech to rummage for parts to sell for ammo each time your done.
