How to minimize the data collected about you

I read this article and downloaded a few of the programs listed. Not that any of us would need to anonymize our online searches....but... who knows what the government will deem subversive.

Yes, install those privacy apps. Also don't log in to public computers to check your email, use Google apps, or even to search.

You can also cut down on some of the snooping recording and tracking by using a non-Chrome browser which is based on Chrome. Like SRWare Iron or Chromium for example.

I have Lookout on my phone but haven't heard of those other ones. I already use https everywhere for Firefox. I guess I'll download those other things.

Most people have already given out too much information about themselves online to ever go back. If you've ever entered data on a website with your real name / information for example, it's out there somewhere. Social networking? Forget about it.

^^ Good point Gmac but the cookie blockers and online anonymizers take just a minute to install and are free. I'd rather be relatively safe (going forward) than keep leaving my searches open to gov't scrutiny.

Are there any computer nerds on here? Which one of these downloads are necessary and will actually help us?

Read "How to Be Invisible" by J.J. Luna. It's not just about internet privacy - it's about privacy in every aspect of your life. A great starting point.

Beyond All Seas

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe.
To be your own man is a hard business. If you try it, you'll be lonely often, and sometimes
frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." - Kipling

Adblock Plus, Https Everywhere, and No Script in Firefox. I don't even know if they're helping or not, but I feel safer.
