Key West (Off-season)

The first thing that's noticable about Key West is the isolation. This place is over three hours away from the South Florida metro area by car, and aside from that most people will only end up here if they're on a cruise in the carribean that stops by for a day. It's like a vacuum where not much really happens anymore and not much changes. You can tell many of the locals who staff the venues have probably been slinging drinks to drunk tourists or playing the same Def Leppard and Bon Jovi covers for at least 20 years. There are also some younger immigrants from Eastern Europe that staff many of the restaurants, but they seem very cold to the Americans that come through, likely from having to deal with one too many drunk asshole baby boomers who are used to getting whatever they want and shitting on the staff during a drunken holiday. The isolation of this place also creates a unqiue situation where there really isn't anything to do because sit around in the sun and get drunk. After a couple of days you will feel like you've seen and done it all.

Most of the activity is centered around Duval street and a few adjacent side streets. There's a large day drinking culture on the island because there honestly isn't much else going on and the large amount of tourists don't have any responsibilities during the day. This also creates a situation where a lot of the bars start closing up at 1 or 2 a.m. because many of the customers have already been drinking all day. If you come down here, you might as well join the crowd and start early because you're not going to do much else.

Despite the fact that Key West is physically so far from the mainland of the U.S., it seems like there has been a deliberate attempt to make tourists from middle America feel at home here. Most venues fall into one of two categories: either places for middle-aged people with families or baby boomers to go into and waste away while listening to Allman Brothers or Jimmy Buffett covers; or a couple of places for a younger crowd that feel like an Ohio State frat party where typical college bar music is played. The island is small enough that there isn't really a fringe scene or locals only place where you can go to get away from this. One expection was a bar called the Green Parrot, but there was a lot of tourist spillover there, and the crowd was noticably old.

You're going to have a difficult time finding girls to approach because pretty much every girl I saw was already with a husband/family/boyfriend. You're best bet would probably be to try hitting on the girls working service industry jobs around the island, because those are the only young females you'll come into contact with that don't already have dudes around them. It's obviously going to be difficult to isolate any of them while they're at work.

To summarize, I was really left with the impression that this is a place for an older crowd to waste away and drink for a few days while on a family vacation and leave. Culturally, it fits squarely within the defintion of an American tourist trap, just the kind of place you expect Americans to go on summer vacation or spring break.

Spot on. I was there for a few days in February and had the same experience. Most of the people are 50-80's. The Keys must have been the place to go for the older generations, similar to what Cancun is to the younger generation. You get some younger people when the cruise ships call on the port, but good luck gaming women that are there for only the day and are probably locked down with their families or girlfriends.

I met a Russian dude last time I was there. What do you think attracts them specifically to Key West as opposed to any other place?
Also, can you recommend a good hostel over there to drink/meet tourists?

That's a bummer to hear, I've been thinking of doing a Colombia trip and flying out of Miami with a side trip to the Keys, and everything I'd heard about it up till now was fairly positive. But, now that I think about it though, from the little bit of research I did it does seem like it's a spot more for middle aged folks, and also a decent number of gay people too apparently. My buddy who went there once kind of talked up the nightlife and showed me some short vid clips on his phone, but I'm not sure what time of year he was there.

Based on this report it sounds like Key West is better to be avoided or skipped, but are there any other nice Keys that are worth checking out, possibly Key Largo? Also, for a guy who is down to not party 24/7 are there really beautiful low key spots for doing nature stuff like kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, etc.? Thanks for any info.

Florida people love Key culture and yeah they drink a shitload even to Ali-b standards. You really need a solid plan there or be the last man standing.

OG you will like Key Largo much better or Islamorada

Lot of Eastern European/Russian workers all throughout Cape Cod and especially Provincetown. There must be some sort of seasonal work visa type thing.

Honestly, I can't tell you. Most of them didn't seem too interested in small talk. There's only one proper hostel on the island and it's a total dump, I wouldn't recommend staying there.

Key Largo is pretty nice and much closer to Miami, you can get there in a little less than an hour from Miami if there's no traffic. There's a big state park with a beach that actually had some good nature related stuff and a lot of pussy the one time I was there, plus Jimmy Johnson (the football coach) owns a restaurant that has some good quality pussy working there called the Big Chill.

I wouldn't say totally avoid Key West, but it's more like a place to just drink and have a lost weekend rather than a place to try to get laid or do anything really interesting.

The Russians seem to be attracted to American beach towns in general, not just Key West. Many work service/labor jobs in Myrtle Beach, SC, Gulf Shores, AL, Orange Beach, FL, Cocoa Beach, FL, Wildwood, NJ, Ocean City, MD, etc. Some are students just working the busy season on work visas, others figure out a way to stay longer. They also come from Bulgaria, Belarus, Ukraine, and other EE countries. This presents a good opportunity to game EE women without having to leave the United States.

Alot of the same demographic seem to staff amusement parks (ie. Six Flags) during the summer.

I'd be down to tap some well preserved cougar poonanie, especially if they make it easy for me. Are we talking hot Miami trophy MILFS looking for a little fun away from hubby, or fat nasty single moms from the mid-west?

I can confidently say you would have a better chance getting this hitting up a Publix in Miami than you would in Key West. When I was down there I saw absolutely none of it.

As a disclaimer I haven't been in Key West during Spring Break, but I would assume the only MILFs around down there are local.

Lets call a club a club.

Hell, I think 18 years old and 2 minutes is considered ancient on the board now.

18 years old and 1 minute is considered almost finished.

That being said, I have only been to key west one time. With a fly girl from Miami Beach.

Let's put it this way: I was not sad that I was with a fly girl from Miami Beach.

I was there in April I think.

Read into it as you like young grasshoppers.
