Contrast Is King Redux

I had work today, construction, I was dressed pretty much like a lumberjack. Week old beard, red flannel, blue levis and steel-toed boots. On my first break I went into the same coffee shop as all of the other construction workers in the area and ordered the same coffee as the rest of them, I was indistinguishable from the rest.

Lunch time came and I didn't follow the pack, I walked into a restaurant that was the polar opposite of where a construction worker 'should' eat. I walked in and the only other customers were 2 younger girls and their beta/gay bff. The hostess calls out 'pick a seat' I pick one right at the bar, on the way to the bathroom and the kitchen. She comes over, looks at me and places a menu in front of me. Just as shes turning away she quietly says "umm don't take this the wrong way, but were you at the coffee shop earlier?" I give her a funny look for a second and then say "yeah, why do you ask" her: "well uh, I recognized you by your shirt". Later I stopped her and elderly chatted about the specials and asked for a recommendation. Right after that she starts with the personal questions "are you on break, where are you working. I catch her staring at me from the computer where you put the orders in and she smiles when she walks past. I go to pay and she touches my hand while I give her my card, says something about the weather and then asks where I live. I tell her I'll be back tomorrow to try the special she told me about.

People, women especially, try to give you labels and put you into a box. They see me at a metal show and say "WesternCancer is a metalhead", they see me at the gym and drinking protein and say "WC must be a meathead" they see me with girls they can never have and think "WC must be a player or gay" When you do something that radically opposes a label a woman has placed on you, you create confusion and ultimately an aura of mystery. She will try her hardest to put you into a box, to know who you are, but when you continually challenge her label of you 'ginas start to heat up, girls get excited.

I fit the image of construction worker exactly, but as soon as I stepped foot in the restaurant her attraction increased because my actions were in contrast with my image. This plus the personal information she got out of me painted a confusing, but intriguing, picture. She wants to know more.

Pook talks about this here.

I buy that. They definitely like to be surprised and find that there's more layers to your personality than theirs.

Damn, I went back in there today, got her number. Game is easy once you know shes attracted to you, and if you're a REAL MAN'S MAN.

to stay on topic. An (older) woman opened me at the liquor store on my way home. She commented on my new prop, something someone who is covered in dirt would not normally have. I talked enthusiastically about it and I could tell she was into it.

Defy expectations my friends.

I said something like this after going to a punk show wearing club clothes and getting approached and stared down like crazy...

It might even be a good idea to wear the OPPOSITE of what everyone else is at your venue choice.

What's more punk, to go to a punk show dressed like everyone else, or to do dress completely different?

This. I'm working now on an experiment that will field test the effectiveness of this idea. I'lltry it for a month or so and then maybe I'll do a thread on how it turned out.
