France repeals 'vague' law against sexual harassment

France repealed a law Friday defining sexual harassment as "the act of harassing others with the goal of obtaining sexual favours" for being too vague. The move dismisses all ongoing harassment cases and halts prosecutions until a new law is passed.

REUTERS - France repealed a sexual harassment law on Friday on the grounds that the definition of the crime was too vague, sparking renewed debate of an issue put into the spotlight by the arrest of one-time presidential hopeful Dominique Strauss-Kahn last year.

Some women's groups said the decision, by France's highest constitutional body, would leave victims without legal protection until a new law is penned, while others argued an improved law could lead to more convictions.

Former International Monetary Fund chief Strauss-Kahn was arrested last May, accused of sexual assault by a hotel maid. The charges were later dropped but the ensuing scandal cast a harsh light on a practice in France of hushing up or shrugging off sexual advances by powerful figures. Feminists demanded a change of attitude.

Strauss-Kahn had already been rapped over a sexual relationship with a subordinate in 2008, who said she felt pressured to sleep with him, and French writer Tristane Banon filed a complaint after the New York case alleging he tried to assault her in 2003.

Junior civil service minister Georges Tron was forced to resign in June after two women who had worked for him filed sexual harassment complaints. One said the debate sparked by the Strauss-Kahn scandal had prompted her to break her silence.

Friday's repeal of the law should eventually lead to clearer guidelines for judges. But the fact the measure goes into effect immediately means that all ongoing sexual harassment cases not yet ruled on in court will be thrown out.

The members of the constitutional council still know what they're doing here [Image: icon_biggrin.gif]

Feminists have been demonstrating in front of the council's hall in Paris today.

They have called the next government to prepare a new law when it comes into power though, and given how much of a pussy is Hollande I'm afraid things are only going to get worse.

I don't know how the French legal system works, but if Hollande has any say the new law will likely be WORSE. The modern left seems to be 100% behind irrational modern feminism. Apparently they think they are natural allies. Which just goes to show how far the left has fallen.

It used to be a coalition of workers and the geniunely dissenfranchised. Now it's all about irrational racial/gender/something else identity politics. It's disgusting.

Actually it's terrible news, street sexual harassment is extremely prevalent in France/Belgium by ethnic minorities. Women are very guarded in these countries because they can get up to 10 comments a day often derogatory about their sexuality. This is why you never see young women wearing skirts in Paris or Brussels like you do in NY or even London, they'd be groped on sight. In Sweden too Muslim immigration is starting to become a huge problem, see the rape crisis there, not supporting feminist laws but sexual violence has become pretty prevalent in most of Western Europe now which eventually leads to further distrust of male strangers which is bad news for us

If you understand French, this is how bad street sexual harassment is there, you can't judge it from an American point of view, there is no such thing happening in the streets of America:

This is from the same guy who posted a thread asking how he could mooch off the European welfare system.

I'm going to go ahead and judge from an American point of view, and say you're full of it.

1) There was already a law against harassment. It's not like harassment was legal in France. The French tomfoolery that they're now moving against was a meaningless expansion of harassment laws spearheaded by the feminists.

2) The link you sent isn't sufficient evidence. You're citing the same discredited schlock factory that brims forth feminist boilerplate about rape culture etc. I don't believe there's all that much difference in behavior among those raised in the West. I'd need significant evidence to the contrary before I thought otherwise.

3) Even assuming the harassment is egregious, the law they're now striking down is fundamentally broken, let them rework a better way to address the "problem," such that it is.

4) If the problem is ethnic minorities, then target the problem, don't create laws that destroy healthy male/female interaction.
