Goal Setting

How do you guys go about achieving your goals?

I've currently got several goals in place, but I need a solid action plan in order to implement them properly over a set period of time. I usually think of them in this time frame:

- Short term goals
- Medium term goals
- Long term goals

I've never been someone who writes down goals. I've always known what I wanted and gone about achieving it. But I now think it's important to write down what you want to help focus your mind on it.

If you don't achieve a goal by a set date, how do you go about changing it?

I work best having goals set. A checklist if you will. I have an errands app on my phone and a poster board on my wall. Everytime I think of something that needs to get done I throw on the board or in the app and transfer it to the board when I get home.

when a task gets done I cross it out. When the board is full of crossed out things I flip it over and use the back. Its helpful because anytime I am bored I can go back and see what else I can do. And when at the end of the day when im crossing out things, it gives me a sense of accomplishment. Low tech, cheap (like .50 for a posterboard from Wally World), easy.

I have those time frames for my goals. Of course long term/medium term goals will change. ie. i want to bang 20 new girls this year or something, maybe you pass that and want to see if you can get 30.

- Make SMART goals.

S Specific Significant, Stretching, Simple
M Measurable Meaningful, Motivational, Manageable
A Attainable Appropriate, Achievable, Agreed, Assignable, Actionable, Ambitious, Aligned, Aspirational, Acceptable, Action-focused
R Relevant Results-oriented, Realistic, Resourced, Resonant
T Timely Time-oriented, Time framed, Timed, Time-based, Timeboxed, Time-bound, Time-Specific, Timetabled, Time limited, Trackable, Tangible
E Evaluate Ethical, Excitable, Enjoyable, Engaging, Ecological
R Reevaluate Rewarded, Reassess, Revisit, Recordable, Rewarding, Reaching

a few other things I do:
- physically write down the goals and have them in plain view. I started by typing them and putting them in a folder on my computer, I rarely checked them. Review your goals often and envision success
- plan exactly how you are going to achieve your goal. eg. "I want to lose 20 lbs by sept 1" "I will do this by eating paleo, 2000cals a day and working out via (insert routine/schedule)" Think of all the variables.
- one of the most important ones for me realize what do you do to prevent yourself from reaching your goals write these down, again in plain view. say one of your largest time sinks is facebook (or the RVF) allocate a certain time when you can use it, before you start using it tell yourself "i want to achieve my goal more than I want to sit in front of this computer screen, it will help me in no way whatsoever"
- have a big list of mini-goals. pick 3 each day as soon as you wake up (or before bed) and put all of your effort into completing those.


As for not achieving a goal by a set date I look back to see if it was SMART. Did I want to lose 20 lbs in a month? If I failed I would realize thats a dumb goal or I would look back to see where exactly I went wrong and could improve. Set your goals again. but with more detail in how you are going to attain them.

One thing that really annoys me in the world today (huge in pickup) is every tom, dick, and harry has a new acronym for a "new model" which is the same exact model that has been done for years. If the acronym introduces something new and genuine, then great. But just about all I have seen don't.

All I see in the SMART model is a bunch of fancy words that just complicate the matter at hand, getting a fucking job done. I am sure it sold books and filled conferences, but it does nothing but rehash what common sense and established teachings should tell someone.

You want leadership and goal setting skills? Read military manuals. The military may have fucked up a lot of stuff, but the leadership information is legit.

Task. Purpose. Endstate. The military model at its most basic. Know why it works? Because a monkey can understand it.

1. This is your job/goal.
2. This is why your doing this job/goal.
3. This how you will know when your job/goal is done.

I could dress up in a suit and talk for 4 hours about it while charging you $650 and providing a sub-par "free" meal that is priced into the attendance fee, or you can spend 3 seconds and reread steps 1-3 for free.

Another beautiful military model. KISS. Keep it simple stupid.

There is a reason military officers are in huge demand by corporate offices these days, because they get shit done. fastest way to 100k job for an average guy? 4 years of college, officer school, 4 years of required service. youll come out as a captain at about 26 and will be able to claim the responsibilities that most people with 10-15+ years in a management role cant claim.

Check out a system called Getting Things Done by David Allen.You can get the book on Amazon

It's the most effective and practical goal setting and time management system I've ever used and I've tried a lot of them

What I usually do is procrastinate. While this is not effective for everyone, let me explain.
I make a list of all the shit I have to do for school or whatever, and when the deadlines, etc, get unbearable, I lock myself in my room and literally bust myself to finish everything. That way I can keep up marginally solid grades while keeping my slacker attitude towards life.

Goal Setting

I have a very simple sheet that I break down by quarters and on Dec 31 of that year. Its split across different groups I want and then I take periodic assessments on where I stand at the end of that quarter.

Used to do WesternCancer's post said but realized that it becomes difficult.

Atleast this way, I visualize stuff and work towards it.

So far, has worked well this year. Have achieved almost all of my goals for the first quarter but work needs to be done for the rest of the year.

I use the goal setting crib sheet from a book called 59 seconds.

Break a goal into sub goals, each sub has a title, a reason i can achieve it, a method, a deadline and a reward. I write this shit down then stick it on my wall.
