Yes, that is what linkedin was made for.

http://www.linkedin.com

It's a one stop shop for organizing all your contacts in pretty much every way possible.

I was looking for a program to do the same, and I found Open Contacts:

http://fonlow.com/OpenContacts/

I haven't had a chance to properly test drive it yet, but it looks pretty powerful, you can associate your companies/contacts with each other, so by clicking on a company for instance all the contacts associated with that company pop up, and then you can click on a person's name and all your contacts associated with that person come up.

You can create multiple categories of contacts as well, so your 'new contacts' can be easily herded into a 'new contact' category and then moved into another category once you've promoted them in your network.

It's not the most intuitive program, though, the biggest turn-off for me is all the menu hunting.

I used Highrise for a while - pretty good if you're actively doing sales, pitching or similar: http://highrisehq.com/ - makes it very easy to track, simple user interface.

Just came across this http://connectedhq.com/ - seems good for just staying in touch regularly, can pull contacts from Linkedin, Facebook, Gmail and whatever else you might use.
