Gang rape video goes viral, shocking South Africa

JOHANNESBURG - A video of a 17-year-old girl being gang raped is spreading by cell phones through South Africa on Wednesday, shocking a nation battling an epidemic of violence against women.

The girl was reported missing in late March and was apparently raped last week in the Johannesburg township of Soweto, police said. Reporters from the tabloid Daily Sun brought the video to the attention of police, who found the girl on Wednesday and began arresting suspects.

"She was found with another man in his house," Warrant Officer Kay Makhubele told the Sapa news agency.

"Obviously she is traumatized and we are going to take her to the doctor now," he said.

Watching the video is a crime under South Africa’s child pornography law.

The Star newspaper reported online that the video lasts 10 minutes and 33 seconds, showing her being raped by seven different males, as she screams: "You are forcing me, you are forcing me."

The video’s spread has forced South Africa to confront its staggering incidence of rape. More than 56,000 cases were reported to police last year.

But the crime is often under-reported, like the case of the 17-year-old. A 2009 study by the government’s Medical Research Council revealed that only one in 25 rapes were reported to the police.

The same survey found more than one quarter of South African men admitted to raping a woman or girl.

Minister for women and children Lulu Xingwana condemned the rape and the spread of the video, which local media said was circulating mainly among teenagers in Johannesburg’s Soweto township.

"In addition to the painful ordeal of rape the young woman was forced to endure, she is now subjected to a second assault on her dignity," Xingwana said in a statement.

While the video is being spread through cell phones and social media, the same technology has captured national outrage at the crime, with the story at the top of Twitter’s South Africa trending list.

Nothing bothers me more than rape. I'm not sure why, but it makes me angrier than anything else. I don't see how one person can do it, let alone a group of 7 who are such fucking pieces of shit that they all have the same mentality. If I ever caught someone raping a girl I would break his arms and legs so badly that he would have trouble using them for the rest of his life.

Women need to stop reporting false rapes and making bullshit accusations so that we can take MUCH stiffer action against these motherfuckers. I would support the death penalty for rape. The problem is, far too many innocent men would become victims. Far too many are already innocent victims by having to spend years in prison, or even just havin their reputations ruined for life, due to stupid ass girls.

I hope they catch these 7 guys and the police who find them take them into a field and do what needs to be done.

A few thoughts off the top of my head:

- Lack of policing
This sort of thing mainly occurs in the slums. Take Tembisa for example, a slum on the east of Johannesburg. It has one police station to service an area with one million+ people. One police station is not going to manage that. In some areas of South Africa the police are too intimidated to police.

- Lack of anything better to do
No job prospects and a failed education system mean that there is nothing to do except violate the law.

- Lack of a clear cost of doing crime
For a slum dweller, being thrown into jail is not necessarily that bad compared to a life of going hungry while free. A jail sentence is thus not really a punishment, it's just one more misery to add to your other miseries.

The cost of crime is simply not high enough to your average slumdweller, but bringing back the death penalty is strangely not on the political agenda, although there are renegade cop units that do take that task upon themselves.

- Need to belong to a crime group
Since a slumdweller can't find work but still needs to eat, he needs to join a group that will teach him how to do crime (it's not exactly taught in school). To join a crime gang generally means participating in group rituals, including gang rape.

- The gangs are not willing to maintain order
Unlike Brazilian slums, where local drug gangs would establish a parallel system of justice to compensate for the lack of government, South African gangs don't seem interested in helping out their communities. I suspect this may be because South African crime lords are foreigners, they have no interest in building up the local communities. News reports suggest that the Nigerians control the drug trade, crime lords in Zimbabwe receive the stolen cars, gun running is managed by the Mozambiqueans, human trafficking by the Russians, rhino horn smuggling by Thai nationals. Chinese Triads and the Italian mafia have also been reported to be working in South Africa. These foreigners are the guys making the big bucks with crime in this country and they couldn't care less about investing back into the communities that host the criminal underlings that they exploit.

I'm not sure why you think I made, or agree, that a murder should be 10-30 years. I can assure you I didn't write any laws in any country. You should stop bringing up that argument and putting words in my mouth, because I made no such statement, and never said I agree with it.

If you don't agree with my opinion that is fine. But saying my logic is "fucking stupid" isn't a great way to start off on this forum since you've been here for about 50 posts.

Maybe you should just shut the fuck up and try to contribute something, other than getting so upset over my opinion on one subject.

How is murdering somebody less of a crime than rape? And women won't stop falsely reporting rape or falsifying rape statistics as long as they have incentives to do so. It won't happen unless Rape Shield laws are discarded and the accused are actually assumed to be innocent until proven guilty. Feminists actually WANT accused rapists to be guilty until proven innocent even though that would undermine the entire judicial system. I saw a hamster fueled rationalization of this on Tumblr. Something about rape being a "special" crime among ALL other crimes as if rape should be put on a pedestal above murder, genocide, war crimes, organized crime and drug running. Rape is assault, sexual assault. It is not as a heinous a crime as killing somebody. Rape shouldn't be treated any differently than any other serious crime and that means no rape shields and no de jure or de facto assumption of guilt all of which is essentially judicial white-knighting.

Lastly, why would anybody want to give their state the power to kill them?
