I never ate asparagus until about a year or two ago. I figure it was because I had a negative view of it from not being a fan of veggies as a child or that the name just sounded disgusting.

It started innocently, a bundle every other week. Maybe a 1/2 cup with some rice and chicken for dinner. I had it under control, I could stop whenever I wanted too. Then I started bringing some for over to friendly cookouts. I was a social asparagus eater. I could stop whenever. Once I followed a man I had just met into an alley where he could give me asparagus. I could stop whenever, I just didn't want to yet. But last night I realized I had a problem. I cooked an entire bundle of asparagus, it filled my entire frying pan. I finished every single piece of it without saving any of it for my girlfriend. Over a pound of asparagus. My precious....

So asparagus has become a staple of my diet. 2-3 times a week, sometimes more. I always assumed it was good for me, all vegetables are right? Last night as I was lying on the floor because I couldn't muster the energy to move due to being engorged on dijon mustard and cinnamon coated chicken, rice, and over a pound of asparagus, I decided to to investigate. Heres my findings:

Nutrients
Good source - One serving of the food contains 10% to 19% of the Daily Value for a particular nutrient
  1. Good source of vitamin B6 - involved in many aspects of macronutrient metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, histamine synthesis, hemoglobin synthesis and function and gene expression.
  2. Good source of calcium - bone health
  3. Good source of magnesium - transmission of nerve impulses, body temperature regulation, detoxification, energy production, and the formation of healthy bones and teeth.
  4. Good Source of zinc - helps maintain a healthy immune system, is needed for wound healing, helps maintain your sense of taste and smell, and is needed for DNA synthesis. Also helps sperm develop.
Very Good Source - One serving of food contains greater than 20% of the Daily Value for particular nutrient
  1. Fiber
  2. Protein
  3. Vitamin A (beta carotene) - Good for eyes, bone health, skin and hair, possible acne fighting benefits. Antioxidant.
  4. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) - essential for the manufacturing of collagen, necessary for tissue repair. vital for healthy immune and nervous systems because it strengthens blood vessels. May slow again and improve male fertility.
  5. Vitamin E - improves immune system, reduces chance of fatal heart attacks in men, protects against heart disease and cancer
  6. Vitamin K - promotes production factors critical to normal blood clotting. Essential for kidney functions.
  7. Thiamin (vit B1) - It is vital to normal functioning of the nervous system and metabolism

Health Benefits

4.Detox - contains high levels of the amino acid asparagine, which serves as a natural diuretic. Fiber also aids in cleaning the digestive system.

5.Heart health - reduces risk of heart disease and increases survivability of heart attacks.

6.Bone health - all sorts of goodies in there. Add a glass of whole milk and go bunch some brick walls.


Preparation

*I am not a chef, so please correct anything or add recipes. These are just my favorite ways to cook them*

Buy it from any marketplace. There is also white asparagus and purple asparagus out there. I have tried them but I have been told they maintain the same health benefits and do not vary greatly in taste.

It should be noted you can eat asparagus raw, so your cooking it to your desired consistency. I use a lot of butter which my generous metabolism allows me to, it is not required.

Steamer - steam it. duh. healthiest.

Stovetop - Cut into roughly 2" sections. saute in butter for a few minutes, rolling the asparagus around to make sure it all covered, then add about 1/4 of water and put it on low for 10-15 minutes. The tops should practically melt in your mouth.

Grill - Place whole spears on aluminum foil. Add butter sprinkle lightly with lemon pepper. Add a small amount of water, just to create a bit of a steamer effect. Close aluminum foil and place on medium heat for 10-15 minutes.

Raw - Slice it up and throw it into a salad.

And now im craving asparagus. Good thing I have three pounds of it in my fridge. I should probably have researched the effects of eating to much of it instead of this.

And it might make your piss smell. It does to some people, it doesn't to others.

Aspargus is a real delicacy. With that said it must be mentioned that it is very hard for the body to digest. People who experience any kind of trouble with their tummy, bowels or digestion should suay away from aspargus.

havent heard of that. I have a friend with colitis that had his colon removed. he eats asparagus all the time, so Im not sure how it could be that hard to digest.

It is believed most people produce the odorous compounds after eating asparagus, but only about 22% of the population have the autosomal genes required to smell them. (from Wikipedia).

Apparently just about everyone has stinky pee. Whether you can smell it or not is a different story.

I remember reading a few seasons ago that the former Cincinnati Bengals WR/current FA Terrell Owens used to say that salmon and asparagus was his favorite healthy meal. He was very jacked for his position. Also, his genetics played a huge role in his physique.
