Chick Gets 3 DUIs In Less Than 3 Weeks

TAMPA, Fla. -- A teen was charged with her third DUI in three weeks, and police say that two of her arrests happened within two days.

It's a distinction nobody would want to have, but police say 18-year-old Kimberly McCarthy now has on her record: Three mug shots in 17 days for the same crime.

McCarthy was charged with three separate DUI's between February 24th and March 11th. Arrest reports show two of those arrests happened within two days.

"Her last one culminated with her crashing in to the back of a brand new car that had only been on the road a couple of weeks," said Tampa Police Sergeant Ray Fernandez.

Depending on your source, alcohol is directly involved in 10-50% of all automotive crash fatalities here in the United States. In a country with 40,000 crash fatalities per year, that's a lot of preventable deaths.

An uncle of mine was killed some years ago in an automotive crash - driver was legally impaired. Losing a loved one is hard enough, losing them because someone couldn't be bothered with calling a cab is incredibly difficult.

This irresponsible bitch needs to be thrown in the slammer for a long time.

yeah, but 3 in 17 days is pretty ridiculous!

i just read the article and only one of the DUI evolves alcohol. the other two she got caught smoking weed while driving. well, that sucks! i wonder why she got pulled over. i'm always in cruising mode when i drive and smoke and i'm safe as shit. haha.

I don't know the law in FL, but in NJ 3 DUIs gets you 6 months. However, you lose your license for 10 years.

I think that would be the appropriate punishment for this girl. Some time in lockup, and permanent revocation of her license. Getting busted is obviously not a deterent to her getting right back behind the wheel and doing it again. She's a legit threat to the lives of others.

A good lawyer here will get her 6mos probation and 1year suspension. My cousin just got his third and he has a blow machine in his truck now. No time.

If they put a breathalyzer (aka ignition interlock device, IID) in the car of anyone who's ever gotten a DUI, the problem would be at least 50% solved. I've thought about it before, and I can't think of any credible argument against this, nor have I seen any. If you've been busted for a DUI, the only reason you wouldn't want a breathalyzer is... so that you can drive drunk.

Imagine you could put a magical safety device on a gun, that allowed the gun to operate for legally acceptable uses, eg for hunting and target practice, but not for say, murdering an innocent bystander. And that people who have murdered in the past still have legal access to guns. Of course, we don't have such a magical device. We respond by simply depriving felons of legal access to guns, which is a fundamental right in American law.

An IID is the equivalent of that magical device, the car is the gun, and the DUI convict the felon. But using an IID lets you preserve the DUIer's right to drive, while mitigating the threat of the DUIer. Freedom preserved, risk reduced, win-win.

The 'freedom'/'invasive' argument against IIDs is bullshit - you're only losing your freedom if you were trying to break the law in the first place, i.e. by trying to drive drunk. Your 'freedom' to drive ends when it means piloting a two ton vehicle intoxicated. And you are actually helping to preserve people's freedoms, by preventing them from getting to the point where their license is taken away.

And according to MADD, drunk drivers drive drunk an average of 87 times before getting caught. Sounds very high, though nobody I knows drive drunk regularly, so I wouldn't know. Even if it were 20 times before getting caught, that's still a lot of risk.

Way back in the day I drove wasted WAYYYY more than 87 times before I got popped.

But then I was a very good drunk driver. Straight as an arrow and never speeding.

If 2 were for weed at fast food drive thrus...I bet she was being stupid and hitting it in line with the windows down so everyone could smell it. Its hard to get caught smoking unless you're driving wreckless or not trying to hide it.

No he drove on the curb once and fell asleep waiting for his food once with cops around. They know wasted people are going to hit the drive windows.

Checkpoints about once every 6 mos but they have to advertise where. It's on the radio and whatnot.

As for me I've been arrested for dui three times and weed a few as well but never convicted of either. Now I live near bars and just walk to them if they suck I call cabs. I was just ramping up at the the casino and left before I started hitting the drinks heavy.

As soon as someone moves here that wants to go in(ahem Ali) I'm getting a Limo and a driver a few nights a week. I started a thread about this once. It could even be part of the pussy timeshare deal.

She gets less and less bangable as the photos go from left to right.

At least she didn't blame her boyfriend for the DUI like this one did:

“Upon further investigation,” the cop determined that Ornelas “was driving with no right front tire and was extremely intoxicated.”

According to a sheriff’s report, Ornelas offered an explanation, of sorts, for her erratic behavior:

Ornelas advised that she was extremely upset with her boyfriend because she did not see the movie Twilight like they were suppose too.”

For the record, I drive "drunk" all the time. Never been in an accident, never driven like an idiot, never put anyone in danger. The legal limit here (Colorado) is .08 and you can get a DWAI, which is basically the same thing, at .05. That's two beers. Two fucking beers and you can get a DUI. I would feel perfectly comfortable if the road was full of clones of me driving around at twice the legal limit. The fatality rate in that case would drop to zero.

The vast majority of fatal crashes occur on country roads/two lane highways, yet cops patrol the brightly lit city streets where nobody dies and pull over people who have burned out license plate lights and give them DUIs.

I really hate to get into this subject but goddamit these bullshit laws piss me off. If you injure or kill anybody or any property while driving, and it's your fault, you should pay the price, whether you're "drunk" or not.

Know what would stop drunk driving? Don't have parking lots at bars. 90% of the problem solved right there.

You can park across the street or two blocks over.

I'm aware of that. It's more of a rhetorical point than anything else.

Proper public transit is the right answer. Take DC, in its infinite wisdom. The metro stops running BEFORE the bars close. f you want to stay out and party all night you need other arrangements which either means a cab, a friend, or in I'm sure many cases you say fuck it and just drive irresponsibly. Even minimal metro activity would be better then "next train comes at 5 am"

I consider having as many viable public transit options as possible a civic duty a city has to its people.

The biggest issue in America is just the layout. The entire country was designed to enslave us to automobiles. Take where I live for example, the closest bar is a 10 minute drive, and it kidna sucks. The closest decent bar is 15 minutes. Closet good bar is almost a 30 minute drive.

If it were a man I doubt it would be news beyond the police blotter. My friend's dad has a similar story (apparently blew a .62 one one) and is just sitting in jail, no news stories.
