Anyone know the fastest way to get a CDL. Are the accelerated courses or anything of that nature.

There are few routes you can go to get a CDL. Some community colleges offer a course to get your CDL but they take an entire semester. If you're paying for it yourself this is the cheapest route but it takes way too much time.

I would recommend finding a good private school. Depending on which part of the country you live in they can cost between 3000 and 5000 dollars. Courses usually last 4 to 5 weeks and provide you all of the training you need to get a Class A CDL with all of the endorsements you would need to work in ND.

I am attending a private school right now. I just finished the first week of class. We spent the entire week in the classroom doing book work. At the end of the week I took a test to get a learners permit at the DMV. The next three weeks we'll be driving. After that I'll take a driving test and receive a CDL with the tanker, hazmat and doubles+triples endorsements.

Before you decide on a school do your research. Be sure to find a credible school. There are some shitty ones out there. This forum has a lot of good info on different schools around the country: http://www.thetruckersreport.com/truckingindustryforum/

You will also need to pass a DOT physical and drug test to get a learners permit and license. Most schools will include the cost of both tests.

You want to make good money in North Dakota

Become a Landman or Title Agent.

You'll probably start out around 60k a year

The job I'm looking at will be paying around 75k base...then pay me living expenses, mileage, and food.

This isn't in N. Dakota...I'll prob be doing this in Illinois, but I would take less pay to stay in Texas...I also have experience.

You can find jobs doing this in Louisiana, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, New Mexico, California, North Dakota....really...anywhere if you have the right connection.

I made the mistake of getting out of it for the opportunity to move back to Texas and now I'm going back to it because of the money making opportunity.

Lots of companies want people to have experience but there are also a lot that are looking to pay less for people with less exp.

I'll share some info I got in this thread. It's just some things an associate told me who's working for a Louisiana company that has him on an offshore rig for a few weeks and home for 2. He's some sort of galley cook with no physical labor or cooking experience besides fast food jobs. Sometimes he does galley hand work and is making about $19/hour right now (started a few months ago). Keep in mind that he's out there living on the rig for weeks with free food and housing so he's just saving it all up. He said people stay on for months at a time just watching it fill up their accounts.

- I asked him about North Dakota. He said I could go but what's the point if it's all in my backyard.
- I went up to Workforce Solutions last week to see if they could help me with any openings on a rig. The lady said maybe but wanted me to spend $500 in training classes before anything. He told me a company will pay for all that if they need you out there and not to waste my money.
- His relative is a captain on a boat out there and helped get him on. I asked him if he could get me out there, but he's to new.
- TWIC has 3 locations in town with employment agencies. He told me to go there, Workforce Solutions again, rigzone.com and up to the companies headquarters around Houston.
- It's a little tricky to get into but once you're in, you'll always have a job with that experience.
- Be clean!! He almost didn't get hired because his dumbass was smoking close to the date and he had to do all kinds of detox methods.

I know he's planning a trip to Europe in early 2013 which is crazy because he was living like a bum not to long ago.

Well, I am going to job interview next week. If I they don't hire me, i'm gonna head up to N. Dakota shortly there after. So, time to get some serious intel.

So who has taken the plunge?

You want to know the only thing you can assume about a broken down old man? It's that he's a survivor.

I know about 5 guys up that way. Only one is happy, but his family is from there. All the others are telling me to stay away, and are working hard on getting the fuck out. Apparently the money isn't as good as some say, nor are the abundance of jobs. The best company up there emailed me last year about an electronics job. I just now emailed them back, 10 months later. Hehe. You can see how enthused I am.

It seems the oil/gas jobs are being overlooked in Western PA. I applied to a few, and will start cold calling companies today. Meh. I got prospective jobs lining up in El Paso, Charleston, the Phils, Kuwait, ATL. The work is out there, not just in ND.

Dammit I wish I was Canadian. I never thought I would find myself saying that.

Guys up there are paying $7-8 for a jar of peanut butter, and having anywhere from $500-1000 taken out for housing. Paying to live in a man camp is inconceivable. Shit like this is killing their bottom line. A lot of the skilled labor is doing half ass work, and some are sent up to get the same pay they'd be getting in other states. Guys are getting laid off. I'm thinking the market is saturated, or it's stale until some upcoming pipelining laws are passed.

I'll take a little less and live in Charleston. At least I'll be in a poosy paradise.

I talked to a guy out there. There is still plenty of work and the pay is decent. The way money is made up there is by tons of hours.

Housing is still scarce and overpriced so guys who find a way to share a RV trailer with 3 other dudes for $400 a person seem to save there.

Since Spring is the start of a lot of construction out there, I see a lot of job openings for various construction related jobs now. Very possible to get at least $20 per hour.

But I keep hearing about the shortage of things to do and lack of any bangable females.

I knew a guy who did that for 2 months and said the money wasn't worth it especially with all the downlow queer behavior going on in the "man camps".

I can see for a married guy how it could appealing to work there if he didn't have to live in the man camp. Just better not bring his wife around.

I've stayed in plenty of man camps and never saw any behavior to suggest that there's any queer behavior going on, infidelity is rampant though and a lot of the female camp staff get dicked while they're on rotation.

nah I missed the buttfuckers thing

I apologize, as I might have posted without reading what happened at the end of the thread.

And I don't remember defending anyone here. did I? If so, that was not my intention. In fact, I'm 100% positive I wasn't defending anyone...I expressed confusion. Nothing more; nothing less.

Just called a friend of mine up that way. He said the boom is coming to an end. It's moving to maintaining the rigs. Housing is much less of a problem, and it is easier to find trained employees. So in a nutshell, it's paying less.

My plan is to head out somewhere in about six weeks to look for oil work. By then I'll have my CDL, $10,000 and a bachelor's degree (liberal arts). My first thought was North Dakota, but if things really are cooling down there I might consider some other places.

Any more recent updates on how things are in ND? (Not doubting you Ali, just trying to get some confirmation. I've been planning this for a while and I'm hoping I haven't just narrowly missed my shot.) I've googled the hell out of it, scoured the city-data forums (interesting place), and read everything I could find in the news. Couldn't really find much. Are there still 100k jobs out there for guys like me?

Regardless, I'm about to quit both of my jobs, cop a van, and plunge into the unknown.

Yeah, if not North Dakota, any other hot spots currently in the US?

PA, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, and PA.

I just applied for a mill job down south. If that doesn't work out I might find myself working on a rig down there.

I'd rather live in the midwest rather than anywhere near DC. Ton of hot natural blondes in the upper midwest (I go for the blondies yay) and also less mainstream culture compared to the East and West Coast which often leads to more entlited bitches (sex and the city syndrome).
