The Belarusian president made this shocking statement in response to German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle’s report that Berlin is recalling its ambassador from Minsk.

Lukashenko lashed out at the European Union in general and at Westerwelle in particular after the EU imposed new sanctions against a number of Belarusian government officials. “It is intolerable for us as Europeans to see human rights and citizens’ rights in Belarus thus violated. This is the last dictatorship in Europe,’’ German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle declared.

“It’s absolute hysteria”, Lukashenko claimed in response – and continued with an outrageously rude comment, apparently directed at the German FM. “When I heard him – whoever he is, gay or lesbian – talking about dictatorship, I thought – it’s better to be a dictator than gay.”

In the contest of global foreign relations and politics , yes , it was a childish,disrespectful statement by the Belarus official.

But taking it to a personal perspective , yes , I would much rather be a Dictator than a gay.

Most of the world's dictators/authoritarians have never come close to prison. Authoritarian leaders are commonplace, and only a few of them are ever brought to justice for having committed crimes against humanity (and, of course, some commit more heinous crimes than others).

Keep in mind that tend to die early deaths due to uprisings, suicides, assassinations etc.

If I was a dictator, I'd live in a gigantic castle with a massive harem. I'd rather be a dictator than gay any day of the week.
