I own the Panasonic Lumix one, it's been awesome (meaning high quality pictures come out--also depends how you compose your pictures), light, and reliable so far.

Iphone or a smart phone with similarly good camera.

Having you phone, camera and mp3 in one is brilliant for a lifestyle "artist". The initial costs might be higher, but ROI should be greater. You always have it on you by definition.

I have a shitty Nokia that i've dropped on cement, in the toilet, etc. etc. and it still works fine. But I'm going to get an iphone or something like it soon.

Iphone.

Or, if you want a camera only, casio makes super-slim ones, that also have ultraslowmo HD that can be fun to play with

I have the Canon G11. I have used this camera more than any other one I have ever owned. I highly recommend it.

Someone else recommended the Panasonic Lumix. Also a great camera.

Depends on what you want to shoot. And your commitment to photography.

Canon G series are top of the line. G11 is current model, however the previous G9 and G10 are still great and a lot cheaper. They are the best camera you can get in a small pocketable package. Many pro photographers use them as a backup and some traveling photojournalists solely use them.

A good Lumix or something from Canons PowerShot range would be next best thing. Fuji's FinePix are also quite good. Sonys Cybershots are over rated and use there own messed up cards that you cant keep for your next camera.

Look at the specs and see what works for you. If your going to be taking lots of party pics - look for something with a powerfull flash and a high ISO so you will get better pics in the dark. Also consider wether you want one powered by AA / AAA batteries or camera specific batteries. Easy to replace AA's on the run Something with high optical zoom number can be handy particuarlly for travel pics, also ability to easily shoot panoramas and in widescreen format.

As Laner says it depends on how serious you want to take photography and how big your budget is. For happy snaps and travel pics you wont go wrong with an average Canon or Fuji that easily slips in your pocket. You wont take any pics if you cant easily take your camera with you.

I have three cameras at the moment, a semi-pro Canon 40D DSLR with about $2k worth of lenses, a big zoom Canon SX20 and an almost 5 year old Canon PowerShot (I got given a Sony Cybershot to replace it 2 years ago that died after less than 12 months). Now you would think the pro camera would be the one I use the most, you would be wrong. I actually use the camera of my Blackberry Bold 9700 the most, because it is always with me. Next is my 5 year old PowerShot because it fits easily in cargo pocket, squeezes into jean pocket. Yes my 40D takes amazing pics however it is a complete pain in the arse to take with me and you look like a tool / easy target to be robed with it around your neck or a a camera bag on your shoulder.

Convenience is king, usability second and quality comes a distant third for all except pro-photographers and the wannabes.
