Analysis of Juan Antonio´s game in Vicky Christina Barcelona

I watched Vicky Christina Barcelona a couple of years ago in a theatre. Back then I was going through a tough period in my life – I was suffering through a life-threatening illness, my mom almost got killed in a car accident, I recently lost my job and was adapting to a new one and last but not least my girlfriend of that time just left me, because I refused to marry her and she wanted to „get her life organized“. A classic case of „misery loves company“ [Image: wink.gif])))) As you can imagine my mind was constantly preoccupied with some BS so I didn´t pay much attention to the movie.

A couple of weeks ago friends (mixed male female) invited me to a „nice movie evening“. They wanted to watch „Vicky Christina Barcelona“. I had a mildly pleasent recollection of the movie, so I thought why not.
Watching the movie this second time I could not refrain from noticing of how much of an experienced player Juan Antonio (played by Javier Bardem) was. And how brilliantly he gamed first Vicky and then Christina (played by Scarlett Johansson). I could not stop myself from „automatically“ analyzing his game while watching. I think there are valuable lessons that can be derived from his game. I wanted to share my thoughts with you and hear what you guys think about it.

First of all I think the man was a genious at calibration / assessing his targets and adjusting his game strategy accordingly. He rightly assessed Christina as being the easier one, the type susceptible to „wild, creative, thrilling and passionate artist who lives by his own rules“, a pseudo intellectual but basically dim witted american girl on vacation.

It should also be mentiond that prior to his approaching Christina gives him a lot of indicators of interest, first in the art gallery and they in the restaurant where she is dining with Vicky.

Accordingly he chooses an ULTRA – DIRECT approach targeted in my opinion solely at Christina to transmit to her the above mentioned qualities („wild, thrilling,“ etc.)

After asking the girls 2 questions (if they are Americans and what colour Christinas eyes have) he invites them to fly with him to Oviedo to see a Jesus – scuplture which „inspires“ him. Then he basically tells them that when in Oviedo they will eat good food, drink good wine and make love. All three of them. Vicky is enraged and tries to cockblock him, Christina is intrigued.

His approach corroborates my own experience that with girls who give you strong indicators of interest the best approach is the direct one (not necessarily as super direct as his) where you don´t hide your romantic/sexual interest. Important is in this connection a strong male vibe and a strong immediate follow up, like Juan Antonios (his bullshit story about going to Oviedo and visiting an „inspiring“ Jesus sculpture).

He spends time with girls in Oviedo and speaks a lot about his past great love, Maria Elena (played by Penelope Cruise). Again, usually a no-go, but he sold it not as a whiny BS about how he misses his ex – gf, but presenting himself as a man who experienced great, wild and dangerous (Maria Elena stabs him with a knife during an arguement) passions in his life, a man capable of such. PLUSPOINTS. I am going to incorporate a similar BS story in my repertoire.

When Christina later drops out due to her stomach illness he spits a completely different game on Vicky. And here you definitely see an experienced player at work.

Assessing Vicky to be a conservative woman who is reserved towards him and is getting married soon, he pulls a game of „I am not hitting on you, I am just killing / spending time with you“. But the whole structure of their interaction is that of a romantic date.

First he goes sightseeing with her. Then he once again pulls an ingenious move – he asks her to accompany him to visit his father, who happens to live nearby. His father is a poet who speaks only Spanish in order not to „pollute“ his beautiful poetry which he deliberately withholds from being published in order to punish people for not having learned „despite of thousands of years of civilization how to love“. HOW FUCKING ROMANTIC AND MYSTERIOUS. Chics love such nonsense.

Watching this I even asked myself if his father was in on it. Either way it was a good move. Now Vicky´s interest sparked and she visibly relaxed. Sensing it, Juan Antonio proceeded to feed her bullshit about how he spent his childhood playing and reading in the garden that he was showing her and how he even as a child, always wanted to be an artist, a writer or a painter because he was „full of feelings“ and wanted to „express“ them. Again, SCORE. She relaxes even more around him and the next thing we see, they are dining in a romantic little spanish restaurant. Again, the vibe is „It is not a date“.

What he does here, is in my opinion, „qualify“ her in the classic PUA – sense of the term. For example he asks her, why she is interested in the Catalan culture, why she is uneasy when her fiancee calls during their conversation, he even states that they are just dining together (meaning it´s not a date) and that he is surprised that she wants to see his work because he thaught that she dissapproves of him. She makes some lame excuses.

Then he invites her to hear some nice spanish guitar music, she gives a token resistance but he quickly convinces her with some nonsense that it is their last day in Oviedo and it would be a shame.

After that she is obviously „in the mood“ and he feeds her extremely cheesy compliments like „you have a beautiful face“ and that he noticed that she was moved by the music and he was moved too, etc, making it seem as if she was something special for him, cracking her open for good. This is the phase, where compliments are applied best – when you are about to crack a chick open and need a nice little final push. After that he bangs her.

He does not call her after banging. Instead he calls Christina and bangs her too after showing her his paintings. Incredible. He must have calculated that Vicky would not tell Christina that she slept with him on order not to appear as a slut (she is about to get married) and in order not to appear as a backstabbing traitor, because she knew that Christina liked him and wanted to fuck him.

So, to quickly recapitulate the lessons from the movie as I see them:

1.Carefully assess your targets + calibrate your game accordingly. Give your targets what they crave. Christina wanted a wild, passionate artist, Vicky wanted a romantic, emotional artist.
2.Open with a strong direct opener if the target gives you good indicators of interest
3.Have a strong, intriguing follow up to suck them into your reality
4.Present your background as intriguing and mysterious, even better show it (keyword: „papa-poet“)
5.Do not shy away from talking about your former wild passions. I think this tactic served 2 purposes for Juan Antonio – first, it showed that he is a man of the world who experienced great wild passionate love and second, it made Vicky want to outperform it, due to competitive nature of women regarding other women.
6.With a reserved woman don´t show that you are hitting on her. Make her relax around you by showing a bit of a vulnerable side, present her experiences to which she can easily connect – like emotional childhood stories aka Juan Antonio. Give off the vibe of „we are just hanging around a bit“
7.Qualify her – VERY important. Make her work and self-conscious.
8.Close by showing how you „recognize“ something special about her.

So what do you guys think?
