Good question. I've always wondered why so many girls walk around/sit around with iPod earphones these days.
Almost every college-aged girl out in public alone - walking the streets, on public transport, at a coffee shops - has got on iPod earbuds. Why? Are they really that into their music? Status symbol? Or is it to deter random guys from approaching and chatting them up?
I don't see this phenomenon with guys nearly as much. Fewer than 1 in 3 the guys out in public has got on earphones and it's usually the herby beta guys that do. But among girls the vast majority do - and I doubt it's because girls love music so much more than men.
This is less common in Europe, it's mainly a North American phenomenon.
