I would say if you are younger than say 26 you can split every once in a while. If you are older forget about splitting.
Most girls I have been on dates always do the taking the wallet move before I pay. But they don't really insist on paying so I'm assuming it is just for show. Keep in mind that I'm talking about $30 max. I never wine and dine them or anything expensive unless we are dating seriously.
My last gf offered to pay about 40% of the time we went out. I let her get the check around 1 out of 4 times because I knew I was better off financially than her.
