I would especially be wary about the "just joking around" explanation later. But maybe it depends upon the cultural context. In the U.S., people make jokes and then say "Just kidding'" whereas in Britain the same joke would be delivered with a deadpan expression, and in Russia the joke would be answered with a severe group beating before the punchline (sic) has been told.

Not giving a toss is actually more than a strategy to impress women. Its a superb way to survive life.
