I can't claim to know all the causes or viable solutions but that's exactly what's going on. I also think it's led to political polarization and identity politics/tribalism as a "new religion". Being a keyboard-warrior today provides the same sort of meaning as those who once joined the crusades. It's just that today, instead of fighting for who runs Jerusalem it's determining whether manspreading should be criminalized and whether those who don't like Captain Marvel's smirk are misogynists. We're just living in a huge spirital void and there's no sense of true physical community anymore.
To be fair, a lot of those keyboard warriors are still fighting over who should run Jerusalem!
