This is simply the natural order of things. You see the same story both in our genetic record, and with other animals as well. (Only about 1 in 10 male hippos will successfully mate as an example.) Women do the selecting for the most part, and they only want the good genes.
The post war years was pretty much the only (brief) period in all of human history where most men were able to reproduce. You might also argue that this created a lot of weak individuals that in turn laid the foundation for the cultural decline we saw with the boomers, and the resulting mess we are in today. It`s an appealing explanation at least.
I have to reject the idea that we should return to the post war model of mating, where most people find someone to reproduce with. It is a fantasy unfortunately, and goes against basic biology and natural "law."
