Was just thinking of the bygone Austro-Hungarian Empire. A lengthy golden age of tradition and splendour, right? Well - it just struck me that it only lasted for 50 years. 1867-1918. That was it for the fabled Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Soviet Union lasted just a little longer, yet seemed like the enduring endpoint of history if you were in the middle of it.
