Sports is a son-of-a-bitch for this kind of thing. Organising a total boycott is almost impossible because even if the teams were willing to risk sponsor backlash then there's always going to be a group of splitters that double-cross everyone else in the hope of some easy pickings at second and third place.

This is an amateur event which is why I think it was allowed. None of the entrants are professionals or part of seriously sponsored teams (apart from maybe their local bike shop). Although some may be former pro's.
My dad rides in these events and has qualified for and competed at the world championships for his age group. He was spewing about this.
