I wonder what made him a target. Often it's guys whose wealth is obvious, for example buy owning local businesses or a lot of real estate. Could also be he pissed off the wrong person... Do you know the backstory?
No, I don't, it looks like they just saw him as a target, they somehow knew he had at least some money in the bank, his wife did pay part of the ransom, 5 million pesos.
