I agree with just about everything you wrote.
Trust the process. Don't freak once you fall off the plan and accept it will happen regularly, just get back. I underestimated how much better shape I was able to get in once I got rid of smoking (the worst by far) and frequent alchohol use. I am in unbelievable cardio shape now, I wouldn't believe it a year ago. It takes time though, just like lifting.
