I do both...sort of. I tended to notice that some of hottest coed backpacker girls ended up at hostels instead of hotels. I started just following them around and later discreetly getting a bed at the same place (preferably near my REAL place, airBnB, hotel or whatever.) I would socialize at the hostel as long as their were hotties around (the coolest guy at a hostel is always getting laid) and go back to my hotel when I want real privacy or comfort. The Hostels are so rock cheap, it's actual economical. I think of it as the cover charge of a very friendly and intimate lounge with a good vibe.
