Tigerman is spot on. However, OP is also right. There are always a lot of girls looking for validation, so you approach thinking of scoring a date only to be rejected or get the 'I have a bf' line. If so move on and don't look back.
Non-verbal cues are often more reliable than the verbal ones. It doesn't really matter what she says unless she agrees to meet you one on one without flaking. Push for the date to avoid wasting your time.
