I mean, there's nothing particularly risque about same-sex roommates. There's something risque about male/female roommates, hence Three's Company.

It's the fact that Bert and Ernie had to have minds of children and sleep in separate beds in the same room that made it seem"gay", but most of the Sesame Street puppets have minds of children. It's the regular actors on the show (Susan, Gordon, etc...) who are supposed to represent adults.
But "authorial intent" goes out the window when SJWs want to reframe and reappropriate intellectual property to suit their agenda.
The fact Bert and Ernie are beloved icons makes them prime targets for gays to claim them as their own, which is also a big reason why Elsa is probably also going gay. If you fall in love with characters and then find out they're gay after the fact then it makes it hard to reject them or their lifestyle.
