I'll repeat my constant refrain: never, ever, ever get "down on your knee" to propose marriage. By doing so, you are automatically handing her a whip to pussy whip you with.

If you decline to get down on your knee, and just ask her in a simple way, then you watch her reaction. If she is delighted and overwhelmed and sweet and says "yes, of course any time" -- then you know she's not getting married just to indulge herself.

If you decline to get on your knee, and she seems upset or pissy about it, hey, you know that you fucked up. You still have time to say "sorry changed my mind" and dump her.

Same with the ring. NEVER give her a nice ring. Just twist some tie-wraps together into a ring shape. Or weave the ring out of some wildflowers. Don't have a ring at all.

If she cares AT ALL about the size or value of the ring DUMP HER SHE'S AN IDIOT. Just think about it. She's getting your income for the rest of her life. She's getting many millions of dollars from you, most likely. You are the single best investment she will ever make, in her entire life. The ring is a nice symbol but what matters is YOU. That's how she should think if she's a smart woman.

Also, if you care about the size the ring, or feel obligated to buy an expensive one, that is a surefire indicator you are messed up in the head and should not get married.
