One of the interesting items is that there are tricks that the publishers do to get their numbers up; such as having special variant covers that are only available for ordering a certain number of comics, or variants themselves so people who think the variant may be worth something will order that issue also in addition to the regular issue.
Marvel has also been accused of simply printing lots of extra comics that were not ordered and having them shipped out to comic stores. The theory is that since the stats are for what was shipped, it is a short term solution to get the number up. Of course, the comic store that gets all of these comics that they can't sell is not happy, especially since Diamond Distributing charges for shipping and that is adding to shipping costs.
