Convicted drug mule Cassie Sainsbury has hinted she has taken a same-sex lover while behind bars in Colombia.

Sainsbury - who became known as 'Cocaine Cassie' - was caught carrying 5.8kg of the drug while flying out of Bogota in April 2017. At the age of 22, she was sentenced to serve a six-year jail sentence.

Speaking from her Colombian prison cell, Sainsbury told New Idea her romance was 'something that's just starting'.

Sainsbury also opened up about teaching English to both inmates and prison guards, and her friendships with rumoured drug dealers.

Sainsbury wouldn't confirm or deny if the relationship she was involved in was with a woman, but her mother Lisa Evans said she is supportive of whatever her daughter's romantic interests are.

'It wouldn't bother me. I'm open-minded. Love is love and as long as Cassie's happy, that's all I care about,' Ms Evans said.

'I'd love for her to settle down and have a family. I have four grandchildren with my other daughter and I'd love to add to the brood with little Cassies.'

Sainsbury said she doesn't speak to any of her friends still living in her hometown of Adelaide, including ex-fiance Scott Broadbridge.

She maintains her innocence, despite being convicted of attempting to smuggle heroin out of Colombia.

Sainsbury previously claimed she was unable to remember the password to her phone, which she claimed contained vital evidence in relation to her case.
