Anyone that wants to get off the beaten path completely and see Thai Islands as I imagine they were in the 80s and 90s should check out Koh Phayam. It’s in Ranong province near the Burmese border. There’s no 7/11s there - that’s how off the grid it is! Flying to Ranong from Bangkok Don Muang makes the journey a lot easier. Check out Chomjan resort. Right on the beach, like $30 per night, tonnes of wildlife (resident hornbills), and a solid restaurant. The whole island is super cheap for everything too.
Best to go November to April. I went outside of those months and it was almost too deserted. Half the restaurants and cafes were closed.
