When homicide suspects get as coercion measure only term od identity and residence, enough said, when also our former PM and Bankers who led the country to bankrupcy stealing all they could, also get the same measure, when the solidarity funds of millions of euros for the displaced and families of the deceased in the tragedy of the fires this summer in the centre of the country simply "disappear"...

Portugal is the best country in the world to be a criminal. Our justice system is totally fucked up, with minor offenses like drunk driving (whitout accidents involved) getting efective prison terms...and two guys conspiring beating a woman with a baseball bat with spikes get nothing...What a bunch of losers anyway who cant beat a woman with their own hands....

They weren´t acquited. They got a suspended sentence/probation. The judge based the suspension on the fact the psychology reports made by state social services were favourable to both defendants. They had overcomed the trauma of being cheated.
He also took into account one of the defendants had medical treatment of depression after realizing he was being cheated. He was diagnosed with a severe depression by doctors. And checked in voluntarily in hospital.
Both have new woman in their lives now.
They didn´t hit her with sticks with nails. The weapon was found in the search warrant of their houses. With many other objects. As guns, etc. They assaulted her but didn´t hit her with this weapon nails. If they did she would be dead.

In fact comparing with general punishments for assaults the sentence is harsh. Generally speaking this type of assaults only is punished with a fine without criminal record. If it´s the first time. Not suspension/probation. If the agressor has a clean record. Which was the case.

Even by common law standards domestic violence is generally punished with probation.

Chris Brown was sentenced to 5 year probation. And Rihanna also took a good beating.

The mistake of the judge was citing the bible. This is were he fucked up. Because citing the bible by itself is now a criminal offense in the west.

He went to jail because when he was in office he cut judges vacation time to 1 month (which was 2,5 month) and salaries. He will probably serve jail time. Unless judges are raised. There´s an arm wrestling between judges and other bodies of power in Portugal.
