Hard to know the truth in scenarios like this...but I'm inclined to believe her if only because of this part here:
An eldest child doesn't just run away and leave his mom & siblings behind if everything is peachy-keen at the crib. There was some serious fuckery afoot and the kid felt like he had to get away. I'm betting if you question the son, he'd back up most of his mother's story.
