The Augmented Reality Thread

When we think about augmented reality, we usually imagine something like the Google glass (smartglasses).

There are 2 main problems with that kind of device: they are expensive and people are suspicious about this new technology.

The first step of augmented reality for a large audience will use devices that are ubiquitous (and less expensive) like smartphones and tablet computers.

Augmented reality can be used for:
- game, shopping, learning and work
- social media
- mapping/indoor navigation
- visual search (the ability to instantly access data associated with anything a user sees)
- visual marketing (visual communication to sell products)

It is super difficult to create a company that can compete with the existing leaders (like McDonald's, Google and Facebook). Augmented reality is an emerging field so there is no monopoly yet, and a lot of money to be made. The technology (hardware and software) already exists, and is waiting for money makers.

Exemple of AR benefit:

An application of AR in retail, IBM utilized the fact that most consumers in a supermarket prefer to have more information while purchasing products.
IBM built an app that allows shoppers to browse through products in a store and use augmented reality to display product information
such as nutritional value(in the case of food), incentives and even loyalty points. Through an AR experience, IBM’s app can also rank products based
on some criteria set by the user, such as low sugar and high ratings. When the user points the camera towards a shelf of cereals,
the app will identify the products that meet the standards and display them to the user.

The Holodeck Of Training Systems
Most user manuals are worthless. They’re chock full of poorly written text, confusing diagrams and outdated knowledge. What if, instead of leafing through pages or scrolling through an online manual, you could simply see your way through a task?

This approach will allow users to see complex procedures animated directly on the equipment they are using. Furthermore, this approach consistently reinforces best practices and incorporates the most up-to-date instructions in the most easily understood form possible — direct demonstration.

Audi, for example, has experimented with an augmented reality application as an alternative to an owner's manual, giving drivers a more intuitive way to explore all the features on their car.
