My favorite recommendations are a) Scrap Metal Recycling, b) Landscape Maintenance and c) Door to Door Sales.
You won't be chained to a desk and most likely you'll be in an all male environment.

Do you know anybody who's switched to these uh... we'll generously call them "careers" and been happy with it? Within the last 5 years?

I've made a ton of money as a young man in my 20's Scrap Metal Recycling and doing Door to Door Sales.
These are great because they are complimentary, you can do one or the other as a side hustle, while the other one is your main gig.
Check some of my other posts for very detailed guide on how to prosper at this.

Now in my 30's I've replaced Scrap Metal Recycling with running my own Small Manufacturing Business, as well as a couple unique Craigslist Side Hustles that I've also explained in great detail in other posts.

I have 3 close friends that all started their own Landscape Maintenance with barely any capital - they are all making a killing right now raking in 6 figures +
We have talked at great length about the different paths they took to success and again, I posted about this with specifics in another thread (search function!)

Door to Door Sales in particular is one of the best things you can do for personal growth.
You'll develop extremely thick skin, public speaking, persuasion, negotiating and cunning conversation skills.
Once developed from D2D, you'll want to transition into Auto Sales then B2B.
B2B is where the real money is at, however you still work for someone else.

If you want to make a nice chunk of change as a Salesman but still want to "feel" like your own boss, try this.
Independent Marketing Consultant

I landed a 9 month contract with a company selling SaaS for Law Enforcement.
Cold Called LE departments 5 days a week for only 2 hours a day but it paid better than most peoples 40 hour a week jobs.
Found the CEO via Craigslist and personally contacted him through LinkedIn to land the gig.
