Is it preferred? No. But sometimes you need a boost of confidence that it provides.
The more chicks you've had, I think the less important it is. It's most important after recovering from a relationship to get over an ex. It's also more important when you're young, lacking confidence, and needing a boost to avoid a multi-year gap as well as social retardation.
The past couple years I've avoided the slump buster per se, and just went after girls that I wanted for more than a bang. A month or so dry spell doesn't kill me. But if a decent chick fell in my lap and it wouldn't take a lot of effort, why not?
