I always LOL at those DC sausage fest pics. I will add one thing: I never stick around when the ratios are so bad that it would take a couple of sorority houses just to dilute things to an acceptable level. I don't even "buy a single beer," lest I support a venue that encourages such a miserable user experience. If there's a decent chance that things will improve, I hang outside, hollering at the new talent coming in, people walking by, or meeting some stray smoker in the meantime.
If I was somehow duped into paying a cover--which I generally avoid doing unless I've vetted the spot some way--I still cut my losses. I consider it part of "the cost doing business."
